Walkie talkies as monitor?

Has anyone tried using walkie talkies as a baby monitor?  It was suggested to me as I'm looking for an audio-only monitor, but would like to know if it works before I go out and buy them.

    I may be wrong but Im pretty sure for Walkie talkies to work you have to press a button when you speak. The baby would obvously not be able to press a button so you can hear them cry.

    I think some of them have a setting where you keep the "talk" function on, so no need to press the button :)
