Its been a super long week here. I feel like Henry is awake a lot... like too much. He's so picky about his pacifiers. We have the soothie and regular avents. He's constantly changing his mind about which one he wants and if you give him the wrong one he just keeps crying. He doesn't poop very often, so I think he might be having some discomfort or constipation issues, the pedi doesn't seem too concerned though unless he goes a couple days without pooping, but so far hes gone about 36 hours at the most. Any advice on how to help a newborn be more regular would be much appreciated as the tummy rubbing/ bicycle legs tricks don't work at all for him.
We took him to get circ'd on Wednesday and I guess I really wasn't prepared for what it would look like. It's really red and maybe swollen? I don't know what it should look like, the pedi said it looked "good" on Thursday. I read that it takes about 7-10 days to heal, but I'm not sure what a healed baby peen looks like. Does it stay red? when does it start to look like just skin like an adult? Clearly I have absolutely no experience with this boy stuff.
And hazel is just damn insane. I can't even handle her. She steals things and hides them, makes huge messes on purpose at every opportunity, talks/ hollers at max volume all day long, or if he starts crying she mimics it, so I have 2 noisy kids to deal with. I want to give her positive attention, but she misbehaves all the time. I really hope it's just a phase and that maybe starting preschool this week will tire her out and give her an outlet for her energy. Very very frustrating, especially when Henry won't sleep during this. Any advice/ commiseration welcome.
Aside from the stress, we are doing very well, I feel great physically, and Henry is a super adorable baby. He loves being held, which I don't mind at all. Here's some cute pics I took of my babies yesterday. You couldn't even tell that hazel is out to get me from looking at these... I bribed her with a cookie
Adorable!! And it all sounds normal - the not pooping, the red penis, the crazy toddler. Hugs. It gets better. Remember some EBF babies only poop once every couple of weeks...our pedi says no worries until 14 days with no poop.
Awwww they are adorable!! My sibling pics in the early days were a no-go. The rest all sounds normal too from crazy toddler to non-sleepy newborn.
We were in survival mode most of my maternity leave. I used TV when I wanted A to chill and my drive me completely insane. I wore J in one of our baby carriers or used his swing (he was a fan of the swing although A hated it at that age). We used "colic calm" to help J with his upset tummy/gas issues and it always made him poop within a few hours too. Hopefully things will settle into a routine for you guys soon!
hang in there! the circ will heal before you know it.
the poop issue seems normal, but if it ever got to a point where i thought either of my boys were uncomfortable, i drank a couple glasses of hemp milk a day. if you are breastfeeding, he will get enough to help him poop.
when i had duncan i had visions of him sleeping while i played in the same room with oliver. NOT. he would scream unless i nursed him in a quiet room. i ended up napping him in a swing with white noise, in a different room. once i got that system down, the stress level decreased a ton.
Pics are adorable, it will all be okay! We had the opposite poop problem, but agree about the EBF babies that it might be a long time so try not to worry. Circ sounds normal, it should look a LOT different in a week. It will look odd, but just follow the directions they gave you and alert pedi is super swollen or oozing of course. No advice on the crazy toddler, but just go easy on yourself (as in tv is a-ok). Anywhere you could send her for a play date for now?
Well you could've fooled me with the photos! Both kids look calm, happy and adorable! I'd never guess you were feeling stressed.
The toddler question is a toughie. We've had some challenges here, too, and I totally hear you on the loudness. In the first few days post-newbie here, some very generous friends offered to take care of Sebastian for some long stints. (It helped that they had kids his age.) They took him on some outings to places that would've been hard for us with a newborn: museums, splash park, etc. If anyone offers the same for Hazel, take them up on it! I felt a little guilty because I'd been away from him for a few days, but was so relieved to be able to focus on one kid.
Alternatively, if you're feeling up to a visit to a close-by park, I say go for it, strap the baby on with a carrier and let her be loud and get some of that energy out.
A was a little slow in pooping, but the doctor wasn't worried. His dad was, though, and put some vaseline on a thermometer and placed the tip very gently in his bum. Much pooping ensued.
Hang in there! Use TV is you have too. Jonny watched soooo much TV the first few months after Benny was born. I tried not to feel guilty about it and reminded myself that it was only temporary. And it was - we hardly ever have the TV on anymore.
Hang in there… I'm right there with you! Griffin has been an absolute brat since the baby came, possibly before, but he's pushing buttons like crazy. It's really difficult… But we have been watching a lot of TV as well and I tried to tell myself that it's okay because it's only temporary. Unfortunately new baby does not like the carrier very much so that's been difficult too! In regards to the boy parts, the circumcision and red penis sounds pretty normal. Deacons was pretty much healed within a week. It was still red, but when we went to the pediatrician she said it was absolutely fine and completely healed. Good luck to you! Wish I had advice but just commiseration for now. Hope it gets better!
Your kiddos are so cute!! I agree with what others said about tv. G watched A LOT of tv when B was a newborn. I'm glad everything else is going well though .
The pics are super cute! J still mimics K to try to get attention. It'll get better, and remember you're in the survival newborn time - do whatever you have to do to get everyone through.
Aw cute pics. Okay - hang in there. It's a huge change for Hazel who previously had ALL of your attention and now she has to share it. It's hard for any kiddo, so any way that she's acting out is completely normal. And Brody does the sympathy crying/yelling too, so I get 2 kids crying at once. I think it's normal to be red/swollen. The tip I got from our docs/nurses is to use a ton of vaseline. It's cheap, it's not going to hurt them and it'll help when you peel the diaper off to not stick. Gob it on. It'll heal within a few days. Not sure what to say about the pacis or the tummy discomfort. Try gas drops maybe? A bath, massage? It will get easier!!!!
My advice for the first weeks is to just do anything you can to muddle through. It all evens out eventually (in my head, when Benji hit 3 months on, I remember it was much better).
What saved us was the swing...it was the only place he would sleep for long stretches. Now he's a great sleeper on his own, but man, without that swing I would have been dead. Is there anything like that Henry is attached to yet?
Oops, I forgot the penis advice (having dealt with two red circumsized penises now...)
Gob on the vaseline as pp suggested, but also keep pulling back the skin gently. Alexander's readhered and they had to pop it off at his 3 month appointment, and it was BAD. Also, now his penis slants to the left because of that, which makes pottying really interesting, because his pee comes out the side of the bowl hahaha. I think it will right itself upon puberty though. The swelling goes down in 2 weeks or so, but underneath stays red for a LONG time, so don't worry if it's still red after two weeks.

the swing was what helped us too. i was so desperate, i tried 3 swings before i found one he liked. he was only happy in the fisher price little lamb swing and ONLY if i put it on the side to side setting. once we go that down, it was SO much better. he took decent naps and everyone was much happier.
Thanks for all the advice ladies. The circ seems to be healing ok. We still are having major feeding issues, tons of spit-up, screaming through feedings, taking forever to burp, and still spitting up over an hour after eating. I'm pretty sure he doesn't poop very often because he doesn't keep enough down to poop out. He has a pedi appt tomorrow and I'm really hoping they can tell us what's wrong and that it's something that can be fixed because he looks so uncomfortable when he eats and I know it's not normal.
Hazels behavior is a bit better, but of course after 2 days at preschool she caught a cold, so now her nose is running everywhere but she still has tons of energy.
The swing isn't a big hit with Henry, he likes it sometimes, but most of the time putting him down anywhere wakes him up and makes him grumpy. He also doesn't really like being swaddled like hazel did, maybe because its too constricting and interferes with his spitting up. Hopefully the pedi can help us so that he's able to be comfortable.

oh boy sounds like my boys that age. one had a dairy sensitivity, and the other had reflux. hope the pedi gets him some relief!

Sorry you're having feeding issues. This sounds very similar to what we were dealing with too. He was very fussy while eating… Almost like the act of eating was painful. But he wanted to eat constantly, like he was comfort eating so he was miserable all the time and then spitting up a lot because he was eating too much. I made an appointment with the pediatrician she gave us a prescription for Zantac. It's only been five days and things do seem to be getting better, but it's still been rough. Good luck at the pediatrician and hopefully they can give you some insight into what's wrong.
Also, D was not a big fan of the swing either, until we moved it into a full incline position. Once we did that, he really liked it. I think it's helpful with the reflux. We have the Fisher-Price snugabunny swing, if that's what you have.
@janneann1127 the pedi is going to prescribe the baby Zantac, but he has to be a month old to take it, so we just have a week and a half to go. Until then she gave us some sample cans of the similac alimentum since we FF. I'm hoping that will help since it's supposed to be really easy to digest.
