Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

FOOD

Baby just turned 1 - YAY! And I'm one of those moms who is nervous about what foods to give him because I don't want him to choke. At the same time, I know he can handle more than I give to him - which at this point is mostly just Stars. Everything else is either yogurt or other baby food that I feed with a spoon. I'm stuck - how do you get off bottles and baby food and trust that your baby can eat 'real' food on his own? What do I feed my baby?

Re: FOOD

  • My kid eats what I eat and is only a few days older. Your LO can handle it. Just start slowly. Start with finger foods (think peas or blueberries), mushy foods (banana and avocado), or things in spear shape that he can easily pick up and get pieces of (cheese sticks, cucumber cut into spears).

I really like wholesomebabyfood.com. Lots of great suggestions and advice.

  • We did BLW (baby led weaning) at 6 months.  Which meant my 6 month old was eating steak and potatoes, broccoli and pears. We never did baby food.  I'm the first to point out that my child isn't some extraordinary super baby - lots of people do this.  Maybe it'll help your own anxiety to realize that many other kids have been eating regular, normal table food since 6 months without choking/dying?

As you said, it's really about trust.  At some point every parent, no matter what age, will be faced with the same concerns.  And not just about food.  I'm sure most of us have children that are ready for the next step before we are.  They're sometimes more capable than we give them credit for.  I'd give him regular food and see how it goes.  I don't know if I'd start with peas/blueberries, but the rest of @flamingemu's suggestions are really good.  Mango, banana, avocado, or pasta kind of mush in the mouth easily.  Spears of things like potatoes (think baked french fries) or toast are easy to hold and bite.

Same here.  We went through/are still going through a phase where LO tries to jam as much food in his mouth as possible, so we have to watch that or he'll gag himself, but he's never truly choked.  I've definitely had to do the whole finger swipe to clear everything out, but he's been fine.  Just cut up whatever you're eating in small bites (think tip of your pinky or smaller) and go from there.  You'll get a feel for what's too big.
  • With the fear of choking it can be difficult, but trust that babies have been learning to eat solids for years and know what they are doing.  You will soon learn the difference between a gag (normal, part of learning how to manipulate the food in his mouth) and a choke.  Start with mushy things, as previously suggested, and go slowly.  I agree with PPs to check out baby led weaning sites and/or ask your pedi.  We started with mushy cooked veggies and mushy fruits and went on from there.

  • I was like you, op, and didn't start table foods until about 1 yrs old. My DD is extremely picky but things she likes are waffles, pancakes, French toast, nutrigrain bars, pastina (mix veggies or a scrambled egg and shredded cheese), bananas. I still give her the fruit and yogurt pouches b/c she loves them.
I feel like I waited to long to introduce table foods bc she's so picky, so I suggest you get off the baby food asap. It really sucks having a picky eater!

  • Steamed veggies, chunks of sweet potato, PB on toast, pasta (mine hates it), chicken, fish, cheese, fruit, scrambled egg with veggies and cheese, oatmeal mixed with fruit, pancakes, waffles, quiche, beans...
