Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Shoes for baby - any suggestions?

I have not posted in a long time so please bear with me.  Baby Cliff is now 6mos 3 wks and doing well.  My mother has already begun asking about shoes for him.  I have no idea where to start with getting him shoes.  We know he needs them, for his feet to grow properly.  Any ideas what to look for or if it should be a concern just yet?  He is not crawling yet and we where thinking abotut waiting until he starts trying to stand.

Re: Shoes for baby - any suggestions?

  • I like doing the ones with the leather soles. Babies at this age shouldn't wear hard soled shoes until they are walking and leaving the house. Soft baby shoes are the way to go. The kind I use is Robeez. I like them a lot.

  • He does not need shoes for his feet to develop properly. It is actually better for them to be barefoot as much as possible. That said, the first shoes I got for DD around 9mo because she was standing and walking while holding hands, wanting to walk everywhere. We got the MiniStar brand leather soft bottom shoes at Target. Do not use hard soled shoes until he is walking well.

  • My dr told me that my lo should only wear shoes when he's walking but only when he's outside/shopping. They don't need shoes for their feed to develop properly. I think thats something our parents were told, my mom is always telling me my son needs shoes also! I bought my son a pair of pediped shoes but he's now 8 1/2 months old and still hasn't worn them.

  • As pp said they do not need shoes for their feet to develop properly, quite the contrary actually.  The twins I used to care for were in physical therapy and their therapist wanted them bare foot as much as possible.  So I didn't purchase shoes until DD was walking outside, but I always get StrideRites.

My DS is also not yet crawling, but I did get him shoes for the fall/winter, for warmth and protection. He has gone shoeless all summer.

I like Stride Rite. Probably overkill in terms of price for not walking yet, but they make cute, well-made shoes that stay on his feet (kicking off is a problem at this age). I paid $30, plus 20% off, for a pair of "crawlers." I love them. I bought a little big so they would last longer.

If you have a Stride Rite go to them! They are wonderful and full of great information. DD shoes ar what they call crib walkers. They are leather shoes with soft bottoms that can be almost folded in half.

  • I am a fan of Pedipeds. They hold up well and are a good quality. If I had a Stride Rite near me, I would probably check there just to make sure my LO's foot was measured properly.

  • Our DD is 8 months old and has never worn shoes.  I love being barefoot so I haven't bothered to buy her shoes yet.  When it's cold, she just wears socks.  I figure I'll buy shoes once she really starts walking for outdoor use.

  • We didn't buy shoes until DS1 started walking at 13 months.  We went with StrideRite early walkers with really flexible soles

  • Shoes are not needed for LO until he is able to walk properly. "Shoes are needed to develope properly" is a myth.
