Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How long before walking?

My DD will be 1 year old tomorrow! She was a preemie born at 32 weeks and has done exceptionally well. For the last couple weeks, she's been cruising around furniture and can walk while holding on to stuff. She can hold on with just one hand as well. She can't stand by herself yet. She'll lose her balance & falls if she lets go. I was just wondering how much longer before she starts walking? Maybe she's behind since she's a preemie. Sometimes it's hard to know what milestone to adjust for a preemie.

Re: How long before walking?

  • DD was not a premie but is very cautious. She started pulling up at 7mo. By 9mo she was walking well with someone holding one of her hands. She took her first unassisted steps at 11mo.

  • i agree with pp, it all depends on the kiddo.  DS has been pulling up and cruising along furniture with confidence since he was 7.5/ 8 months.  now at 11 months, he still isn't walking or standing without holding onto something.  he's content with getting around by crawling and holding onto things, so he has no real motivation to walk right now.  i figure when he's ready, he'll take off, and until then he'll just do his own thing.

  • Happy birthday LO!  DS just started walking last week.  He was cruising for well over 3 mos. before he got the courage to just let go.  All babies will develop at different rates.  You guys are doing fine.

  • DD was full term and started walking at 14.5 months.  There is a wide range of 'normal', but I know they want kids walking by 18 months.  Crawling is so wonderful for children developmentally that I never encouraged them to walk, so IMO it's wonderful that your LO is still crawling.  Enjoy not having to buy new shoes every 3 months, those dang things are expensive :)
  • Honestly it just depends on the child. My first was cruising furniture at 8 months and walked at 10, my second was doing the same thing but walked at 13 months (both were born early). My third is almost 9 months and has been cruising for almost 2 months, the last month takes about 4 steps a day unassisted and still isn't walking. Sometimes its confidence, sometimes their brain just needs to catch up.
  • Agree with PP's that every baby is different and it sounds like she's doing well. As far as milestones for a LO born at 32 weeks, you should be using her adjusted age until she's 2 years old.
  • DS started cruising at 7 months and didn't walk until 13 months. DD also started cruising at 7 months. She turned 10 months today and even though she is super agile and flies around things I don't see her letting go any time soon.

  • None of mine started even cruising until closer to 12 months.  DS didn't walk until 15 months, but DD#1 walked at 13 months (she actually didn't even start crawling or pulling to stand until 11.5 months - but once she got started she progressed quickly!).  DD#2 is crawling and nowhere near cruising or walking.
They all do it in their own time!
