Kick counts for multiples?

Was this something that your OB or MFM advised or instructed you about?  If so, starting at what week and what were your guidelines?  What do you do about the movements where you're not sure which baby was responsible?

It's on my list to ask about at my next appointment, but none of my doctors have mentioned this yet (last MFM appointment was at 24 weeks, and I have another this week at 27 weeks).  Just curious to know what's normal for others.

Re: Kick counts for multiples?

  • Mine didn't really touch on it for multiples. They just kind of said to make sure I feel 4 kicks in an hour. Some days, though, one baby is more active than the other. I'm interested to hear what you find out.

  • Mine didn't have me do it at all.  They said it can be hard to tell who's kick is whose.  I just made sure I felt them each daily.

My OB said I should just look for a sudden change in movement, while my MFM had me do them. I can't remember when they had me start, by I know it was especially important because my boys had IUGR.

ETA: I'm sorry I can't remember the details. I do remember asking about knowing which baby was making the movement and they told me not to worry, as many women end up being wrong about which baby is doing what when they see the new positioning on the most recent ultrasound.

  • My OB didn't have me do it... he was a little flakey anyways.

  • My OB had me start at 30 weeks. The babies can't really switch sides, so it's usually pretty easy to tell which baby is moving. Baby B always moves more frequently than A (I see this in our NSTs also).
