April 2014 Moms

Moved from March to April due date and NEED to find out the sex...

I went in for what I thought was my 12 week ultrasound today, thought they might make a guess at the sex....doctors said their tech is amazing.  But instead found out I am only 9 weeks along. Besides realizing I'm going back in time as far as pregnant weeks, I'm also sad not to know if it is a boy or girl!  Is there any way to find out the sex early?!!

  • There is a at home test (intelligender?) that can be taken between 10 & 13/14 weeks. It's like 87/90% effective (more for boys than girls). I'm considering getting one: but of it comes back a girl and then we see a penis on the ultrasound I will be devastated (I have three amazing boys, but have always wanted a daughter--this is my last chance).

  • Sex determinations at 12 weeks are not nearly as reliable as they would be later on.

Is your dr concerned that you're measuring so far off what you thought? Because that's definitely a more pressing issue than not being able to see the sex so early.

I agree with all of this! Plus we were given a guess at 12 weeks, the tech said she guess boy. Well DD is most definitely a girl!! In my area there are places who say they can tell you the sex at 15 weeks, via an ultrasound, but they are expensive, and I don't even trust it at 15 weeks!

  • I know I know....patience is a virtue. But we have a wonderful10 month old boy and I'm just so excited at the thought of a little girl too!  I can't wait to pick a name, start decorating the room,  and yada yada yada.  Toothpastechica I know its not going to change now or later I just hate the suspense!

Bah.....I guess I'll be waiting for a while!!  I did see someone mention a Harmony blood test in another thread and that it can tell you the sex.  I looked it up, but I don't think it is something I am having done- maybe if you don't have a risk of Downs in your family you don't get that test.  At least, I did not have it my last pregnancy.

  • I was 4 weeks off with my second so it is possible for there to be that big of a difference and everything be fine. My midwife never even questioned it.

  • Should I be worried about the due date change?

I took a pregnancy test, received a positive response, went to the doctor, reported my last period, and they gave me a due date based on that period.  But it was also my first period post partum.  So today when I went back for my first ultrasound the tech realized the size didn't match.  She asked if my periods were irregular and I told her I didn't know, because it was my first one in almost 2 years, she did not seemed worried about the baby or anything.  They just gave me a new due date.

You probably had a longer than usual cycle, and ovulated later than usual. I wouldn't worry about the discrepancy in EDD, especially with that being your first pp period.

  • I wouldn't worry.

  • The new DNA tests (Harmony, MaterniT21, Panorama, etc) test for chromosomal abnormalities, as well as tell you the sex. They just recently became widely available - I doubt they were an option for your last pregnancy.

However, many insurance cos won't cover them unless you are AMA or have other risk factors. If you are still interested, you can ask your doctor what the lab charges (it was only $145 for us to get the Harmony even w/o insurance - we opted to do this instead of the NT scan and quad screen).

There is no way I would trust a guess at 12 weeks. 15 would even make me nervous. If the DNA tests aren't an option for you, I'd just sit tight and wait until your anatomy scan.

I would not waste your money on this test -- especially if a contradictory follow up u/s might upset you so much. Nothing in your urine can demonstrate the sex of the baby you're carrying.

  • I've heard of people finding out as early as 13 weeks with those 3D ultrasounds you can get at private u/s places.  I'm not sure how expensive they are, or how likely you are to find out for sure that early (could depend on the position of the baby, etc).

It's really unlikely that you would have found out anything for sure at your 12-week u/s anyway.  Some techs will guess, but I wouldn't use that info to paint the nursery or start buying gender-specific stuff.

  • I have seen those 3d scans at 13 weeks. I would suggest a big no. They will give you nightmares.
Also let me get this straight, you wanted to go into your first OBGYN appointment and find out the sex? With your first... when did you find out the sex?

Our OB doesn't complete their sex scan until 20 weeks. If you do opt to get a sex determination before then I would either make sure what you're buying is grey, green or yellow or at least keep the receipt.

You can search other BMB who are past the 20 weeks and see polls of people who had a sex test completed and whether or not it was correct after the 20 week scan. (I am assuming you know this because it's your second... but you neven know...)

I'm having the harmony test done. We have no risk of downs in our family but genetic testing in our area is offered to all patients. You can choose to not get it if you don't want. Out of all my friends and family I know one person who did not get it. It is pretty standard in our area.

  • I understand being excited, but, try to live in the moment! Of course, early pregnancy moments are kinda crappy, but, I don't want to skip steps and know things earlier. Be excited, speculate, play the silly gender predictor games, but don't risk early detection mistakes and possible disappointment at the actual 20 week scan if they are wrong. This is something where skipping steps is not a good thing!

  • There is no familial risk of Down Syndrome, it's not genetic (the exception is the higher risk of DS if the parents themselves have DS). It can happen to anyone, though the odds are slightly higher the older the expectant mother.

With that said, NEED to find out the sex? You've got a long way to go, lady, better make this an exercise in patience. It'll serve you well as a parent.
