Pregnant after IF

sad after ultrasound

So today we had our 20 week check. There was a long wait, our appt was at 5:15 and we weren't seen until 7ish, we were the last couple so I imagine the ultrasound tech was tired and anxious to go. She did the u/s, LO measured on track, heart rate good, we seen her little tiny feet and her legs, kidneys, knees, head, most of the important stuff. However she said she needed to do a transvag us because my cervix looks short. So I begin to panic. To then find that my cervix is fine and still plugged.

So we go to meet with the OB. Now he told me at our 16 week check because I'm overweight, they may not be able to see everything and if I want he can send me to my hospital to MFM to check. I declined. So today he tells me, "everything that we did see was normal and fine. The baby looks good. But we weren't able to see some things (I was so torn I forgot to ask what they didn't see). He said that the cord is coming out of the side of my placenta. He said that can be a problem closer to delivery and may need a c-sec., but he said most of the time it moves, they will continue to check on It.

He asked again if I wanted to go to MFM to get an U/S to see everything. I asked him what would he do if he were me.. He asked if god forbid the baby comes out with a defect, would I terminate. I said NO. He said he asks because im 20 week and terminating is limited to 24 weeks. He assured me that all that he seen was fine and normal. He said if I want to go I can, otherwise he'll see me in a month. I decided to take the script and I'm going over to the damn hospital. I have to make an appt and god willing they say everything is okay.

I have been down, uncomfortable and fat lately so to hear all of this going on just made me feel a hell of a lot worse. I just hope that my LO is okay.

Has anyone had experience with this??
Prayers please!

Re: sad after ultrasound

  • Definitely will be praying for you!! I don't have any advice or information. Why would he ask you if you would terminate because of a defect?? If I was you I'd gather my thoughts and questions and give him a call. He said that from wha they could see the baby looked fine so I'd be confused why he'd talk about the "what ifs" of a defect. I've googled the cord on the side and from what I've read it's just something that has to be monitored but everyone was fine. Try not to stress out! Do not let your heart be troubled!

  • Thanks Angie. I can't help but to cry. Its so hard. I lost 42lbs before our IVF cycle. I'm so happy to be PG and bringing a life into the world that the thought of something being wrong breaks my heart. He said the whole terminating thing because I asked him if he was me what would he do... would he go to the hospital for a second look or not. So he said if something is wrong would u terminate? Because the weeks are getting limited for that. He assured me several times that i am okay, and that everything that was seen looks fine.. I should have elaborated better when I wrote the post my thoughts are just all over.

He also wants me to gain only 5 more lbs. So I literally have to get back on my diet. Which is tough because I can't stomach my favorite veggies. I just keep praying and have to stay strong for our LO. IF brain sucks q

  • It sounds like everything went well at your ultrasound. Everything they were able to see looked good and you have a referral to check on the things they couldn't see well (which happens and sounds like your doctor is handling appropriately). Cheer up - unless I'm misunderstanding something, your appointment sounds positive to me. No birth defects, no worrisome abnormalities, no markers for genetic conditions, and your baby looks healthy. Opting to go for another ultrasound might give you peace of mind, but doesn't sound like your doctor thinks it's even a necessity. This all sounds like good news and not something to be sad or panic about.

  • Given your appointment, I think it may give you some peace of mind if you see the MFM. They are great at in depth ultrasounds. Where I am high risk, I see my MFM every month. It really helps reassure me that little one is a-ok. Hang in there, I am sure all will turn out just fine.
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • Thanks ladies. Its just IF brain and to think of things that can probably go wrong is scary. You all always make me feel better. :)

  • Big hugs- sorry you are feeling like that. I think it would be worth a trip to the MFM. Everything looks good, but incase there is something that needs further attention when the baby is born then you will be well prepared. Plus it's a chance for another peek at your little girl! I go to the MFM every 2 weeks for uktrasounds and just enjoy watching the babies flip around while the tech looks. More information is a good thing!!

  • Thanks ladies. I made an appt for Monday @ 2:30. A co worker goes every 2 weeks n she says that the machines there are reaply advanced so im praying they are able to get a good look at my LO. The whole placenta thing is freaking me out. I'm in such a panic, but I'm praying that it moves. This placenta has been giving me trouble since 13w. But I truly appreciate the comments it really does make me feel better.

  • Don't panic, Hon - It sounded to me like your doc was saying that if it wouldn't change whether or not you would go forward with it, then you don't need more testing - not that there was anything wrong.  Like, what's the point of more tests if it won't change your plan of action one way or another.  What he doesn't seem to get, however, is that us PG Moms WORRY about EVERY LITTLE THING and if they mention a tiny something might be wrong, they better follow up with tests to make us feel better.  :)  Praying for you and your beautiful, sweet babe.

  • i don't understand your resistance to go to a MFM? it's just another Dr, and they have higher def equipment than an OB.

I'm happy you made an appointment to go in! I think that was the best choice because they will have more advanced equipment to take a good look at your placenta. Plus, it's always a good day when we can see our LO's on an ultra sound. I'll be praying for your placenta! Never thought I'd say that to someone. :)
