9/11

Watching a special on tv... Made me cry. Can't believe it's been 12 years, feels like it was yesterday when I was watching the news and saw the second plane crash.

  • I know I can't believe it's been that long either. I remember it being to most beautiful day here and watching in on tv while I was in high school.

  • Man I feel old... I was in college history class... when they told us all to go home I thought the world was ending. (I live in NY, but not the city)

  • I was in my freshman year of college in Washington DC. You could see the Pentagon burning from my dorm. I can't believe I was only 18 then! It kind of seems like yesterday and sort of feels 100 years ago at the same time...
  • I was a freshman in college as well.  I had biology at 8am and remember a guy coming in saying a plane flew into the world trade center.  I didn't believe him.  After biology I saw it on the news. The rest of my classes that day were cancelled.  We all just sat around watching the news coverage.  I am from Long Island and went to Ithaca College so know people that lost loved ones.
  • My H and I were just talking about that last night. I was in college- I saw the second plane hit on the news in the student union. Then they locked down our campus and made us all go to our dorms and stay inside. The whole thing was scary- but I remember thinking we were all in danger because of the lock down. Since we couldn't go outside, we all just watched the news all day. I have never watched so much CNN. Hard to believe is has been 12 years.

  • I was in my junior year of high school, 4th period, Mr. Slegal's AP American History class. A teacher ran into our class, whispered in his Mr. S's ear and then he turned on the TV. The whole school stayed in 4th period for the rest of the day. We all were stunned. It still makes me cry to think about

  • I was a freshman in HS living on the west coast. I was still sleeping when my mom burst into my room and told me to get up immediately because a plane had hit the twin towers. My exact response was what are the twin towers and who cares. A few mins later I did get up and as I was walking into my front room I watched the second plane hit. I remember when I had to go wait for the bus all the planes were flying so low and I was terrified. Once at school everyone just stayed in their homeroom classes and watched the news all day. Later that evening I went to church for a huge prayer service and that's when it really hit me, I don't think I have ever cried that hard in my life. Just a few years ago when I joined the Navy this day took on a whole new meaning for me and I get really choked up seeing things that happened on that day. It's a day that no one will ever forget.

  • Yup, I was a freshman in high school and we watched tv all day in class but since I'm in Hawaii I found out in the morning when I woke up and my parents were glued to the tv... I asked what happened and that's when the second plane hit. My cousins lived in the city and both sides of my extended family are on the east coast... Luckily everyone was ok in our family but man was it scary.

  • I was a freshman in college in CA an worked at a bakery. I had to be at work really early in the morning so I had no clue what was happening until a customer came in and said a plane hit the World Trade Center. We listened to the radio all morning and I remember them saying someone jumped out of the building and I just lost it. My boss finished up my customer so I could get it together. I remember that I didn't see any of the visuals until the end of the day because of work and class.

  • I was a senior in college in the city, in a very early class when the first plane hit. No one knew what was happening; it was terrifying. My little sister was in college in DC and no one could get ahold of her for hours because the phone lines were jammed. My parents wanted me to try and walk across the bridge into NJ but I chose to stay put with my friends, listening to NPR because cable was out.

I sincerely thought there was a good chance that it was only the beginning and I was going to die; all of us did. The city was essentially occupied by the army for weeks; it was crazy to see tanks in the streets and any time a plane flew overhead (once they were flying again), everyone looked up. Everyone.

This is the first anniversary when my PTSD hasn't flared up and I attribute it to Ezra. This little guy brings so much hope and goodness into my life!

Yeah I was in DC. The phones not working was awful! I still I have emails I was sent that day because people who wanted to get in touch with me couldn't call me.
  • I was 27 and home sick from work. Ivied in downtown jersey city so the wtc was right across the Hudson. My cousin and uncle worked downtown and I wAited all day to hear that they were ok. There was endless smoke where the towers once stood and flyers everyone in Hoboken and jersey city of missing people. I remember going to have drinks in a bar in my neighborhood and all these young soldiers were there about to be deployed. We had drinks with them and I often think of their baby faces and hope they survived the war that was to come.

I was 8 when it happened, so all I remember was hearing my mom talking on the phone in another room and seeing a fire on the news. A few years ago I watched the specials and really understood how tragic it was.

same here, except I was 7... It was also the day my cousin passed from leukemia, as an unrelated event

I was also 7. I just remember watching cartoons in the morning before school and my dad came in the living room and changed the channel. I really didn't understand what was going on until I was older.

  • My story isn't anything unlike all of yours, but it's truly amazing to me how we all knew exactly what we were doing and where we were at that moment 12 years ago. And hearing about those of you in the area (I'm in NJ) really hits home. I had the day off from class (college freshman) and was sleeping in before going to visit my bf at his school. My friend called me and told me to turn on the tv. I just sat there in disbelief. I never went to visit my bf (he was a 40 min drive into PA) and instead just sat with my friend watching the tv and cried. A girl who graduated HS a year after me lost her father. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. Every anniversary makes me cry the same way all over again.

  • What a tough day. I was a junior in college about an hour north of manhattan. I was at the gym working out and I nearly fell off my treadmill when I saw the coverage. My uncles both worked downtown (a block or two away) but were safe thankfully, and my sister saw the second plane hit from the highway on her way into the city going to her college.  A couple of friends lost relatives. I didn't turn on the tv all day yesterday until last night to watch the Yankee game and their tribute.

As a teacher here, I've taught a couple of children whom have lost a parent in the attacks and it never gets easier.  It's such a heartbreaking time in our history.

  • My mom worked a block away from the Trade Center. It took us all day for us to hear from her as all of the cell towers were out. And she had to walk from there to 125th street to catch a train back to our house. That's about 3/4 the size of Manhattan in a professional suit.

  • Also, last month for our 5th anniversary, DH and I went to the 9/11 Memorial. As I was taking pictures, I found this written in water among the names of those that passed and found it so fitting. If you're my FB friend, you saw what I wrote to go with it.

  • I was 13 and in 8th grade. I didn't know what the World Trade Center was and didn't really understand what was going on. I do remember I was in Mrs. Peacock's class but I don't remember what class that was. I was also sitting by my friends Jaclyn and Emily and I think Mike was sitting behind us. Since then I've watched specials and things and I can't believe how I didn't "get it" back then.

I agree as well. Sometimes I wish 9/12 was an actual holiday as well- so we could always remember the way we came together instead of just remembering the day everything fell apart.

  • I wish I had seen this post on Wed. So glad that someone had acknowledged the day. It seems that everyone has forgotten. My job didn't even do a moment of silence which they have done in previous years. It's very hard for me to forget...my husband is a firefighter. We attend a little memorial every year at the station to honor his fallen brothers, our fallen family. Just think...someday we'll be telling our little ones all about this day, where we were when it happened, and what it means to us and to be a patriot.
