Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Sleep...... 4 month old - is this the norm?

Just wanted to ask if anyone is having the same issues as me with sleep? .... My 4 month old baby girl cries and resists every time it's time for a nap or night sleep. Im Watching for tired signs and the length of time she's awake so I don't think it's too early or too late but I can usually only get her to settle by carrying her and walking/rocking and singing. It's a good 20 mins at least before she falls asleep and its a couple of attempts to put her in her cot because she'll wake up. I'm finding it emotionally exhausting to hear her cry every time and physically my back is killing me! Is this normal... Will she grow out of it? Anyone else experiencing the same thing?

  • My 3 month old does the same thing for his naps.

  • 4-5 months sucked for sleep. J needed tons of attention, and he would wake up and want to play in the middle of the night. He fought naps terribly. He has been much improved the past 2 weeks. For some, it gets better. Some babies will always fight sleep. We will have 4 or 5 good days, and then 1 or 2 crappy sleep days.

That being said, if you continue to rock her to sleep, she will be used to being rocked to sleep. If you don't want to have to rock her to sleep, there are things you can do to change that habit once she's a little older. If you feel comfortable with it, Ferber's book might be helpful for you. I found it very helpful. Even if you don't use the modified CIO method that he proposes, there is tons of info in the book that I found very useful.

  • My LO is 4.5 months old and we are also experiencing struggles with day time naps.  It takes just as long for her to fall asleep compared to how long she sleeps for.  I can totally relate!  And an overtired baby means cranky at bedtime!  I am hoping its a phase and things will get better..... For both of our sake!
  • My lo is almost 5 months and ever since she turned 4 months we have been having the same problem. It's not really better yet and I have not really found any solution, but just know you are not alone!

  • Our 5 months old had a shift from STTN to being a real pain, since about 20 weeks (2 weeks ago).  He will get very twitchy/jerky and will pretty much always have to be on our bed, put on his side, and allowed to grind his face into our side or into a pillow or something.  It sucks, we did a bad job at sleep training (no training).
  • Same issue here. I BF him to sleep at night (I know he's not going to be 5 years old BFing and don't believe in the bad habits thing.) For naps, we found that the swing gets him to sleep the best. Today he was being so difficult, I took him for a ride in the car on purpose until he knocked out and he's been sleeping the last 2 hours now.

  • I can't get my LO to sleep during the day. Same kind of thing, she will take twenty minutes to fall asleep. She takes very short naps (10 to 20 minutes). This started happening around the time she became more alert. I've tried putting her down earlier, later, all kinds of things. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It seems very hit or miss. When I'm home from work, I nurse her before she goes to sleep for naps and that is even hit or miss. She sleeps great through the night though.
