Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone's DC getting PT for gross motor delays?

My 9 month old DS is not moving yet.  He can sit up and just yesterday went from sitting to tummy.  He can't crawl, scoot, slither, etc;)  He has only rolled over a handful of times.  My pediatrician wants to do a milestone check in 6 weeks (she thinks maybe his leg muscles are too weak), but part of me thinks I should just ask her for a PT referral now and not waste 6 weeks.  I do believe he's fine and time will get him where he needs to be, but he is SO frustrated and it breaks my heart to see him cry and cry when he wants to move and just can't.  To me, no harm in getting him help sooner than later.
SO, has anyone gone to PT?  At what point did you decide to go for an eval?
Thanks!

  • Do you do any kind of developmental assessment with the pediatrician?  We do the ASQ (clicky) at our visits.  If so, does he fall somewhere in the realm of normal?  If you don't do a formal assessment, look at those items (and then it tells you how to score it on the last page).

I'm a pediatric physical therapist and if you brought a 9 month old to me who was sitting, has the ability to roll, but just hasn't been moving around much, I likely wouldn't think it was TOO out of the ordinary (although it's hard to tell without the baby right in front of you).  Even though he's frustrated, which I'm sure he is, it doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem!

How much time does he spend on the floor every day?

What kind of devices does he spend time in (bouncer seat, jumper, bumbo, etc), and for how long?

If you hold him in standing, does he bear weight through his legs?

Give him every opportunity to move, and get down on the floor and play with him.  Try putting your hands behind his feet during tummy time and see if he'll push against you (and scoot himself forward).  Floor time is the best thing you can do!

  • I agree he could just be at the later end of average. However, I am a big believer in trusting mom gut so go ahead and schedule an appt. it can't hurt!
  • kjsmith9, thanks so much for that info.  he scored 30, so not too bad.  he does bear weight on his legs and I, deep down, know he's ok, just developing these skills at a slower rate.  I think I'll call my pediatrician and ask her if we can go ahead and do a referral now, just for some peace of mind and a little help for my guy:)
