Success after IF

Ok.. now Nutramigen and some answers

So we're back from the pedi with Ben..

And we did get some answers. She ran a tube up his nasal cavity to see if there was true blockage or it's just stuffiness. The tube went right through which means there is no blockage and what we're doing is correct. Saline.. humidifier.. ect.

Then she did a stool sample to check for food allergy. It came back as a mild positive for milk allergy. So.. she's going to treat him aggressively for reflux and allergy.

Translation.. now he will be on the lovely $25 a can Nurtamigen and will start on Zantac today. She still wants to see how my other boys do on the Gentlease till Monday but forsees they could all end up on the Nutramigen.

I just tried to give Ben his first bottle of it.. he's not taking it. Spitting it out. Great.

Oh. .did I mention that when I got home from the Dr. my dog had barfed all over the stairs and the carpet is pretty much ruined there now?

Will it ever stop? Will I ever get to sleep?

  • Oh gosh. Poor Jen. I wish I lived closer. I'd come help! Really! Baby barf, dog barf.... no difference, I guess. Yuck.

Did you check with your insurance to see if they'll cover the Nutramigen? I believe many do.

GL and just take it one moment at a time. I hope you get some help.

  • Hey Jen-

Glad you got some answers! Connor was on Nutramigen starting at 8 weeks all the way until he just stopped bottles at 13 mos :) If you have any questions.....let me know! It is expensive.......BUT....worth it. Do you have a CVS card???? I would buy lots there and they give you CVS bucks and coupons all the time. We used to get a ton of $10 off a $50 purchase......so I would buy two cans and save $10 :) Also.....a lot of times they have it on sale for $22.....which is the cheapest I have found it anywhere locally.

Besides CVS.....Target has the best prices. Oh....I should add that some CVS's don't carry formula....so you have to hunt around to see which ones do.

Connor still spit up a bit on the Nutramigen.....but....it lessened. It does taste kind of gross at first (have you smelled it??LOL! yuck!) but....he will get used to it! If I get any Enfamil/formula coupons....I will send them to you b/c I know how pricey it is!

    GL!

  • I'm so sorry you are having a rough day (or more like a rough week).  At least you have some answers and hopefully Ben will start to feel better!  When it rains it pours right?  Sorry about the doggy barf....that is the worst thing to come home to especially when you're already having a bad day!  I just saw your e-mail and will get back to you soon!  Hang in there you're a rock star!

  • I agree about checking with your insurance about them covering part of the formula. My pedi wrote a letter to my insurance company saying that DS needed it and they do cover it. We pay $12.50 for 15 cans...it saves a lot of money! Good luck, I hope your boys do better on it!!
  • Oh, I'm SO glad you got some answers! I think Ben will be feeling so much better soon.

Question though, I've never heard of a poop test for a milk allergy.. was it just that he found occult blood in the stool? I'm just curious.

    Thanks!

  • I'm so glad you got some answers and have a plan now.  DS was on Alimentum (Similac's version of Nutramigen) until he was 18 months old.  Our insurance wouldn't cover any formula for any reason, but our pedi advised us to buy it through eBay.  We usually paid about $12-15 per can buying it that way.  We always bought through different sellers and just paid attention to their feedback scores and we never had a problem.

  • I hate to say it Jen, but Ethan still wont take nutramigen. We fought to get him to take it, but he screamed for every single bottle.

I wish you better luck than I....
