Special Needs

Dyslexia

HI,

My 7 year old 1st grader who has ADHD and a Articulation Disorder was diagnosed with dyslexia last week.  We have notified her school but are waiting on the official paperwork with the diagnosis from her doc (she sees a team of specialists for her other issues at a behavioral clinic) before we can get her IEP updated.  Her IEP (for speech but mentions the ADHD) is due for updating this fall and I have already spoken with school and it won't be an issues to get accommodations added.  Question is I am not really sure what accommodations she is going to need at this point - she already sees a speech therapist and is in a special reading group.  Her teacher has taught kids with dyslexia before so knows how to help her.  She sees a tutor (starting next week) after school once a week.  I know she will need more accommodations as she gets older for testing and stuff but not sure what she needs now.  Also, any other places to get support, a chat group, etc would be a great.

Re: Dyslexia

  • Thanks for your response.  My DD"s tutor will be doing Orton Gillingham with her once a week and DH and I reading up on it.  I have dyslexia as well (same as my DD's) so I have a really hard time helping her with reading/sounding out words etc so most homework will fall to him.  I have not talked to school yet as I am still waiting on the official report from the docs (should get it this week).  Her speech therapist and teacher are aware of the new diagnosis already though.  Not sure what the plan will be for school yet.  As far as the diagnosis, I honestly feel that all are related.  DD was born with a brain injury but its hard to know if these are just genetics (ADHD runs in both DH and my family) and she was a very late talker and has been in speech for a few years already for that.  We see an amazing team of specialists, have since birth, so I am confident in their diagnosis and we see at least 1 specialist for review every 4 months (for meds and a check in) and the plan is to reasses her every 2 years unless we request it sooner or school feels she needs a new assessment sooner.  I am looking into an amazing summer reading program that I found for kids with dyslexia at a local school for kids with attention and learning disabilities - its a 4 week day camp close to our house.  Right now, I am not willing to pull her out of public school as our school has an amazing special ed program but if needed, that would be an option.
