Motrin?

I'm just curious to get a poll of sorts here... do you give medicine for fevers?  When Raylan was sick his fever was up around 103 without the meds and he was miserable (not surprisingly.)  I did what my pedi said both times he was sick and kept him on pretty regular motrin... I let it wear off at least once a day to see where his temp was at, but otherwise I was trying to keep him comfortable so he could sleep.  I thought this was mostly common...but then I found out two of my friends had had their kids get seizures because their temps were so high because they were trying not to medicate?  I'm not trying to start a war here... I'm just curious.  I know I got tylenol as a kid if I had a fever and it's been around forever... plus I chose a pedi I can trust b/c I'm not a doctor... so I do what they suggest as long as it's something I'm comfortable with... is this common? To avoid meds at all cost even a high fever??

Re: Motrin?

  • yeah we give the motrin always for teething and seizures.
why on earth would you let a child suffer?

We give Tylenol for fevers (or teething pain).  I hate having a fever and always appreciate the relief that comes with medicine.  I figure she probably does as well.

  • I will admit to holding off on the meds during the day to see where the fever might be headed.  That way I can gauge the course and severity of the illness. I can be very vigilant during the days.    At night I am all for meds becuase I would hate for a fever to spike and me sleep through it. Also the doc told me teething pain is the worst when they are laying down, so I hate to think of them in pain and all alone.

  • I use Tylenol or Motrin when Wesley has a fever, or for teething pain.  I don't like to be in pain so I don't want him to be in pain either.  We follow the dosage chart and only use it when necessary. I also trust my Pedi and id she says its okay to give it to him then I will.

Also, my pedi said if K's temp stayed really high (I think over 103 was the magic number) then we might start to discuss tylenol +motrin, though they don't recommend both until it gets very bad. So clearly not anti-meds.

I did this a few weeks ago w the mysterious fever illness

Yea- fortunately we weren't using that brand.

Also- yes when he had the super bad fever pedi recommended both because it would still get up to 102 again hours before he could have more motrin.  I hated giving him so much, but honestly with my past if he had a seizure I don't know how well I could deal.

I'm with you on this one.  I like to know where the illness is headed.  Plus I just don't like to give Motrin unless it's really bad.  I feel like there's way less info out there on the effects of long term use than there is with Tylenol.

Don't get me wrong, I would never not give meds if he seems really uncomfortable...but if it's not bothering him I'll hold off for a while. With my older son, he asks for meds when he stubs his toe.  So I really have a hard time deciding when it's really "bad enough" for meds with him.

  • I give tylenol if she's really really unconsolably fussy and save the motrin for fevers and such.  Like pp's said, why let them suffer?

Our pedi says 101 or under, let the fever run and monitor it. Over 101, treat with medicine, and if it doesn't come down, call the nurse line. We have a 24 hour nurse line, which I cannot begin to explain my love for. I call someone whenever I want guilt-free because they are sitting in a call center!
This is similar to how we handle fevers as well.  I also agree that 24-hour nurse lines are one of the greatest services ever!

  • If she seemed fairly comfortable, I held off and let the fever do it's job. Basically once she hit 101, she was uncomfy, so I medicated at that point.

  • Yeah I agree with others low grade fever monitor. Around 100 - 101 or higher meds. Tylenol is my go to but I have used ibuprofen as well. Also give meds for teeth.

  • We use both Motrin and Tylenol as needed for fevers, teething, post vaccines if she is uncomfortable.

  • Yeah...I used to work in Pediatrics so I saw many febrile seizure patients. For one I will say any parent who has seen their child seize never wants to see that again. So I will medicate any temp over 101. When my DD was 5 months old she had a really high temp, she was so out of it. I kept up with the tylenol around the clock as much as I could (I didn't wake her up to give it)..And the pediatrician had told me I could try Motrin but I didn't cause I felt a little weird doing it before 6 months. We use Motrin for teething pain too. After 6 months my pediatrician just said "use motrin, it works better".
