Mobile baby needs advice on sleeping

My DD is almost 12 months old. She's always been a pretty good sleeper and has STTN since 4 months old. She was easy to swaddle & put down when young. We don't swaddle anymore of course. For the last month, she's been more mobile and active. She pulls herself up and walks around while holding on to stuff. When it's bedtime, she'll fight us on it now. She will immediately roll over and stand in her crib instead of fall asleep. She'll fuss and won't lay down. I've started putting her in a swing at night to get her to fall asleep. When she's strapped in and can't get out, it forces her to 'give up' and fall asleep. Once she's out, I can transfer her to the crib no problems. I know it's a bad habit to put her in a swing to fall asleep. Trying not to do it. Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated!

  • DS has been like this lately - when I put him down for naps, instead of rolling over and fall asleep, he now pulls up and stands in his crib.

When he first started doing this, I would keep going back in and lay him down, sing his lullaby (part of our nap routine).  It worked maybe 10% of the time; the other 90% of the time, he'd be up standing again.  Soon I got tired of doing this; and DS seemed to think this was a game (w/me keep going back into his room).

Now I just don't go in at all.  He usually will "play" for 10-15 minutes.  We only have an audio monitor, but I can hear him plopping his butt down on the mattress over and over again.  Eventually he gets bored/really tired and he settles to sleep.

DH puts DS down at bedtime.  Part of the routine is turning the light off.  Usually that signals to DS this is time to sleep.  He may whine/cry for a few minutes but he hasn't been standing up at bedtime for us.

  • im having the same problem! my son has been crying at the top of his lungs standing up and the minute we go in and rock him, he immediately falls asleep.  we are going to try to sleep train again this week.  I think its due to us being on vacation and messing up the schedule hes had for months.  good luck!
  • I agree with PPs.  My LO starts to fall asleep as she's standing holding the crib rails...then she sits and I can see her eyes are closed, eventually she lays down.  I watch her on the monitor.  I think it will wear out and eventually it won't be such a novelty for her but I think the swing might be the start of a bad habit

  • Thanks for everyone's responses! I quit putting her in the swing tonight and tried having her go to sleep on her own in the crib. It was our first night, so I expected it to be long, loud crying and awful. I put her down and I left the room immediately. She crawled and stood up all over the crib. She initially cried and screamed at first but then eventually laid down and fell asleep on her own in 30 minutes. I only went in there once to reassure her ( but didn't pick her up). So far so good. We'll see how the rest of tonight goes, but for now I'd call it a success. Thanks again girls!
  • It was another successful night! For our 2nd night, it only took her 10 minutes of crying and fussing before she laid down and fell asleep on her own. So much better than the 1st night of 30 minutes. I'm being consistent and it's working. Thanks girls!
