Using the bath tub?

I'm sorry if this has been covered already...but I'm curious how many of you are using the actual bath tub for bathing your LO's?  I haven't moved DS from the infant tub yet, but am strongly considering it.  I just bought a bath mat.  But, he's still a little wobbly and I was unsure if it might be too soon.

Re: Using the bath tub?

  • We made the switch a couple weeks ago.  I felt as though her attempts to reach out of and stand up in the infant tub were putting her at greater risk.  We were also running out of room for her toys.  I am really happy with the switch.  She can scoot around a little bit more and doesn't seem to try the dangerous stuff anymore.  We still are working on "staying on our bum" in the tub but, in general, I think she is safer and we have more fun. The increase in water was one of my biggest concerns but she is perfectly happy with just a couple inches of water.

  • I bathe both babies in the big tub now. I was nervous about it, but we switched about a month ago and have had zero problems. We do have a bath mat and a spout cover. They do really awesome in the big tub.

  • We use the inflatable duck tub.  Occasionally he gets to go in the big tub with his big brother. He's just too much of a spazz to be in the big tub on his own.  (He finds it hilarious to knock the bath toys/shampoo bottles/cup for dumping water into the water to make splashes.  He also always tries to scoot around & ends up slipping.)

  • We have been using the regular tub for a couple months. DS spends the entire bath trying to stand up, so it is a struggle. The few times I let him stand he fell over and bonked his head. I wish he would sit and play.

  • I started using the big tub around month 5 or 6.  I'd get in with her and let her sit with me kind of holding her steady.  At 8 months she took her first bath without me and it was a failure.  She flipped over super fast and landed face down almost in the water.  I was holding her arm and yanked her up super fast, but it was a major mommy fail.  After that I kept bathing with her.  About a month ago we tried again and she's been fine.  She tries to stand up in the tub, but I put her back on her butt and tell her to stay seated.

  • We went from the baby whale tub to the big tub probably around 4-5 months.  She was too big for that tub and someone mentioned on this board, to put a towel down in the big tub and let her lay there.  That worked well until about 8-9 months when she started wanting to crawl all over the place, so back to the whale tub, but this time we put it inside the big tub and she sits the other way so that there's more rook for her.  She usually lasts a while like that.  I try to wash her hair first and then body and then I let her play.  Once she starts to turn and try to get up, bath time is over...lol  15-20 mins.  Her hands get pruny anyways so I think it's plenty of time

Easton either takes a shower with one of us or he sits in the bath tub. He isn't too wobbly with the bath mat.
This except no bath mat. She sometimes tries to crawl, but we stop her. Mostly shower though.

  • He has been in the regular tub since 6 months. It is easier to bath both boys together. He does pretty well but has just started trying to stand so we have to remind him to sit.

  • We do, started around 7.5, 8 months? It was pretty nerve wracking until he could crawl at 9 months, because he would try to flail all over and I kept having images of him cracking his head on the side.

  • We have been in the big tub for a while. No bath mat but she have a new tub that has a no slip bumpy bottom on it. I have the whale spigot cover and she loves to play with the water under the spigot she crawls around after her toys in the tub and loves to stand up but she we are working on sitting on our butt in the tub.

  • We switched to the big tub when DS was around 9.5 months.  He tries to stand up when DH bathes him, but he hasnt' done that with me yet.

  • Big tub - I am constantly telling her to stay seated in the tub. "We sit on our butts during bath. Please don't stand up in the tub. Anna, sit or you are going to fall."

  • Raylan is in a bath seat in the big tub...he might be fine without it but he doesn't mind it and it makes me less nervous since he can't stand or slide around.

  • Wow - I feel like a bad parent.  We ditched the infant tub at about 3 months and then ditched the sink at about 6 months.

The bottom of our bathtub is textured.  He has had free roam in the tub the entire time.  He can stand up and even cruise in there.  He will crawl, roll, and dip his head under the faucet.  He LOVES it.  He is content in there for about a half hour.

  • We have been using the big tub for months now.  All my son wants to do is stand up.  He has great balance, so most nights we just let him.  Sigh.  Not winning parents of the year on that one, but we are picking our battles and this is one we just can't fight at the end of our long days.

I just wanted to add that ever since the article was posted about dry drowning or whatever it was called,I freak out if he gets water all in his face! I really need to get over it! Haha
I have been avoiding that article because I know I will be exactly the same way.  Just last night she was trying to drink water that was running out of her bucket and she inhaled it and choked for a second.  It scared the crap out of her and me and then I thought "I should look up dry drowning" and then I quickly decided that would be a VERY BAD idea if I ever wanted to sleep again.

  • We never used an infant tub for either kid. We only ever used those big turtle sponges from BRU. Just laid baby on there in the big tub from the beginning and now he just sits on it and I lay him back when I wash his hair. Easy peasy.

  • He has been in toddler tub in the bathroom since 5 mos sitting up on his own... Poor laziness we have not made him use the regular tub yet

  • So...as a follow up, I put DS in the big tub today for the first time.  I learned a few things:

    1.  I don't need the bath mat.  The bottom of the tub has a no-slip feel to it.
    2.  The drain doesn't plug.  Even when I push the nob to plug the drain so water stays in the tub, it doesn't work.  Shit!  DH will have to look at it when he gets back from his work trip tomorrow.
    3.  He was totally fine.  He didn't try to stand up or anything.  He just splashed around like usually and played with his toys.

Thanks ladies for all of your comments!
