How much folic acid for twins?

I went to my OB yesterday and asked if I should be taking more. I told her that my prenatal has 800mg in it currently.  She said to double that.  She also went into a tangent about how "most" prenatals have 400mg.  So, last night my DH and I realized we were confused if she actually believed that mine had 800mg or she was going off the 400mg and wanted to double that.

LOL

I made this WAY more confusing than it needed to be.

Third u/s 9/9/2013 - 157 and 161 heartbeats ... a BOY and a GIRL!!!! Cervix on the "shorter side" (3-3.3) - going to check again in 2 weeks.
Fourth u/s 9/23/2013 - Baby A = 157 Baby B = 150 heartbeat. Cervix now 2.3-2.6 ... being referred to a MFM
MFM Appointment 9/26/2013 = Both babies healthy, cervix now measuring at 4 - Playing tricks on me ... will follow up in 2 weeks.
Cervical check 10/7 with regular OB - 2.1cm  --- going BACK to the MFM armed with ultrasound pictures from my OB of my cervix. *sigh*
MFM Appointment 10/8 - confirmed my cervix at 2.1cm - putting me on Progesterone for a week.
MFM Appointment 10/17 - Cervix unchanged! Keeping me on Progesterone - followup 10/29

    My OB wanted me to be taking an OTC supplement in addition to the 800 (mg/mcg? can't remember dosage) I was getting in my prenatal.  I think the supplement was for 400, so I was taking 1200.

    Starting at 20 weeks, my MFM put me on a whole list of supplements (which he explained was more for me to replenish my body rather than the babies' growth and development -- different b vitamins, iron, more calcium, magnesium, etc.), and he had me pick up a prescription for folic acid.  I'd have to look as I can't remember if I now take 2000 or 4000.

    So to answer your question, if your OB was like mine, then she probably did mean for you to take more than the 800 in your prenatal.  You could always call her nurse to confirm the amount.

    I'm taking a prenatal which is 800mgs plus 2MGs of folic acid on top of that

    Mono/Di Twins - Due March 3, 2014 (Realist EDD - Feb 5, 2014)

    I'm on 3800 Mcg's per my doctor. She's very conservative but I'm okay with that.
    TTC since May 2010. DX Unexplained IF. IUI #1 in August 2012. Clomid, Menopur plus Ovidrel. BFN. IUI #2 in September 2012. Clomid, Menopur plus Ovidrel. BFN. IUI #3 in October 2012. BFN. IVF in April/May 2013. BFP with b/g twins! Due February 2, 2014. Thank you God!

    Ha, my doctor didn't tell me anything. I had 1mg in my pnv and that's all I took. I'm thinking I should have been taking a lot more vitamins than I did. My OB was a little flakey

    yeah mine have 1MG plus im taking one with an additional 1 mg every day. I think there is a difference in the measurements here...

    My RE said you can never take too much Folic Acid.. I take a prenatal + (3)1000 mg daily.  She said if you body does not need it all it will spill into your urine.

    I asked my OB about this after seeing the thread. She said the most important time to get enough folic acid is the first tri when the neural tubes develop, other than that the prenatals are enough!
