pump parts at work

Just curious what everyone does with their pump parts in between pumping sessions?

Rinse? Ziploc bag in fridge? Wash?

I used to just rinse and let them air dry and do a hot soapy water wash when I got home, but read somewhere I shouldn't be doing that.  I tried just putting them in a bag in the fridge, but the milk seemed to get all sticky and crusty and gross without rinsing them off!

Re: pump parts at work

  • I wash mine in between each pumping session.

  • I don't do anything at work, just wrap them in a burp cloth in my bag. At night I hand wash in hot soapy water.

  • @Clarypax Do you find that they get sticky and crusty between pumping sessions?
  • Mine never got sticky or crusty.

  • I kept mine in the cooler bag with my milk in the office fridge.
  • @theresat858 Why would rinsing them make it so they couldn't store out for 8 hours?
  • The milk itself has antibacterial properties. Rinse off the milk - they're gone, and the bacteria can have a field day.

  • Tupperware in the fridge (easier to wash and reuse tupperware over ziploc bags). But our nursing mothers room has a full-sized fridge, so I don't have to worry about how much room I'm taking up.

I wipe the flanges down before putting them in the fridge.

  • Hmm, I think I either need to wipe them down or use a fridge at work.  I have been putting them in my cooler with ice packs but I don't think it's quite cold enough and that's why they start to get icky.
  • I have two sessions at work.  After the first session, I rinse the parts, put them in a ziplock, and stick them in the fridge.  After the second session, I wash them in hot soapy water.

Me too.  In fact I even leave the pump parts attached to the bottle and on my handsfree bra in between sessions.  I don't put the cap on the bottle until the end of the day when I am done.  Never had an issue and I've pumped for over 15 months total now.

  • I wipe down with pump wipes, and allow to air dry per the instructions. I don't have access to a clean sink/fridge. If I'm concerned about rinsing- I use the "hot" on the water cooler in my office to rinse.

This is what I did as well, just wiped them off a little with a wet paper towel and then put them in the fridge.

  • I also put them in a bag in the fridge in between sessions. At the end of the day I wash them w/ baby bottle wash and dry over night. Today I actually used the microwave bag to sterilize.

  • Tupperware bowl in the fridge and then hot soapy wash at home at the end of the day. Same thing with empty but used bottles; pump into them once and then combine. I use the second bottle again at my next pumping session.
  • I wiped them down with a medela wipe, tossed them into a big ziplock bag and kept them at room temp till the next time. They were washed each night in hot soapy water. Two years and no problems.
  • Wow I must have missed some memo about leaving the breastmilk on the pumping parts. I rinse everything after each pump and store in ziploc bags. I guess I will start just putting them straight into the fridge.
