Sleep training and daycare

After giving birth, I plan on going back to work FT. This means sending LO to daycare. I also plan on "trying" to sleep train (I'm crossing my fingers it works, but if it doesn't, then oh well). Anyway, does anyone know if day care centers will follow your sleep training requests, or are they un-doing all the training that you are doing at home?

Re: Sleep training and daycare

  • Honestly, I would follow the DC's lead.  The environment is great for getting LO on a schedule. Reinforce at home.

  • I think you can definitely sleep train for night sleep while they are in daycare and daycare will not mess it up at all but the day time naps will most likely be different for them than you. But I don't think that will really be a problem.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • We started sleep training at 3 weeks, so by the time LO started DC at 12 weeks, he was already set in a routine and DC followed our lead on his schedule for eating and sleeping. For infants, I've found the DC will follow your lead and expectations as long as you communicate them (certain times for LO to eat, when LO gets sleepy/naps, etc...).  As LO moves on to toddler is when you start to conform more to their routine (when snacks, lunch, and naps are).
  • Daycare will take tips on how to get your LO to sleep, but I agree with @LoCarb and I'd follow daycare's lead as far as getting your LO on a schedule.  Also be prepared that your LO's sleep will most likely get messed up when they first start in daycare because of the new environment.  I wouldn't stress out too much about trying to sleep train.

FWIW, I have a 12 week old who has been in daycare for 2 weeks.  We let her dictate the schedule right now for feeding and sleeping.  Our only goals at this point are to get her to fall asleep on her own in her crib.  We are working on that both and daycare and at home.

This.  DS2 has been in daycare for almost a month and most days he takes several really short naps - like 20 minutes.  He hasn't adapted to the noise yet so it's hard to do any sort of sleep training until/unless they actually are going to embrace sleep :)

  • Practicality wise, if your sleep training method involves putting baby down and letting them cry/fuss, I can't imagine a lot of centers using that method since it would be so disruptive to the other babies.

  • Most centers have rules and regulations that they must follow, and they will not "sleep train" your child.

Our center has a separate napping room for infants, with windows so that teachers can still see the babies.  However, they cannot leave an awake baby in there on their own.  So they must get the baby to sleep and then put him in the crib, or pat the baby's back until he is asleep in his crib.

Until 12 months old, our center rocks babies to sleep.  It was fine.  Even after sleep training, I still rocked DS to sleep.  A few nights of sleep training helped him sleep through the night, but I still enjoyed rocking him to sleep.  Now he is almost 2 and doesn't want to be rocked anymore.  Enjoy it while you can!

I totally agree with this.  When DS started DC at 3 months, they asked us what his schedule was and they followed that for a while but it wasn't too far along that they had him on a daily nap schedule with the rest of the infants, and we, then, adapted to that at home.  It worked out really well for us.   I'm not sure what you mean by sleep training with respect to napping, but I can't imagine a daycare with other infants to tend to (and keep on their own napping schedules) will be able to let a baby CIO, but I might be wrong.

  • Do whatever works for your during your maternity leave!!!! However you get your child to sleep so that you can rest is what is best for you & the kid. Everyone is different which is why there is more than on method. LO will adjust at day care with probably minimal issues if they are 6 or 8 weeks old. I keep day care's schedule on the weekends. I would ask her teachers how they get her to sleep since they are with her more than I am for those times.
