Help with food aversions

Still in 1st tri and feel nauseous all day long. I know I need to eat to feel better, but nothing sounds appealing. One minute chips are ok and the next they make me sick. Same with fruit, crackers, nuts, yogurt. Ugh. Anything that you ladies can eat all day long and be ok with? Im feeling defeated and physically drained.

Re: Help with food aversions

  • I found sucking candy or chewing gum helped; something about the swallowing seemed to help. Also, ginger ale (i am sure you know of that one) and lemonade, had to be the fresh kind from chick fila or simply lemonade! Keep eating and drinking all day, I promise that one day the nausea will go away and you will freak! Haha! Hope you feel better!

  • I'm almost 20 weeks and had HORRIBLE nausea all day and the worst food adversions up until 2 weeks ago. I could go days and not eat a full meal. Honestly nothing really helped me- I had to force feed myself. I did and still do chew gum everyday all day. Ask your doctor for Zofran. I went weeks where I felt it didn't work but now at 20 weeks if I don't take it the nausea and vomiting comes back. Try not to eat the same thing you can tolerate too much or you could be like me and overdose on it and not want it at all. I was surviving on smoothies to get nutrition and you can suck it down with a straw without having to taste it too much. I would literally thank God in between my heaving because morning sickness is a sign of a healthy baby. Good luck to you!!!! I hope you feel better soon!

  • Something that helped me when I felt nauseous was therapeutic grade peppermint oil. If I was feeling nauseous I put some round my navel and felt better in 5-10 minutes. Smelling it helped, too. I ordered mine from amazon for about $10. The brand is Plant Therapy. I also got ginger root oil but the peppermint is so effective I don't even need it!
  • i'm feeling the same way :(

i've been trying to eat smaller meals and more often ...like 5- 6 times a day.  i also drink fluid but not a lot at once- like a 4 swallows at a time and repeat it in 15 min or so.

hope we feel better soon! :(

This isn't true. It is a myth and I think perpetuating it, even if it makes one feel better emotionally, is damaging to women who do not have any m/s and to women who have unhealthy pregnancies/babies who do have m/s.

    From the Mayo Clinic:
    from Roger W. Harms, M.D.

Nausea and vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy, also called morning sickness, can be signs of a healthy pregnancy. A study of more than 2,400 pregnant women associated nausea and vomiting during the first trimester with a reduced risk of early pregnancy loss — particularly for women age 30 and older.

Shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to your uterine lining, your body begins to produce a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). While the cause of nausea during pregnancy isn't clear, nausea typically begins when production of HCG begins. As a result, nausea during pregnancy might indicate that you're experiencing the normal climb in pregnancy hormones needed for a healthy pregnancy.

Other theories suggest that nausea during pregnancy might:

    • Reduce fetal exposure to potentially dangerous substances in your diet
    • Encourage you to eat foods that contain certain nutrients, such as those rich in carbohydrates
    • Prompt you to adjust your activity level to favor maternal and fetal tissue growth

A lack of nausea during pregnancy, however, isn't necessarily a cause for concern. Some women don't seem to experience common symptoms of early pregnancy despite the generous production of pregnancy hormones. Also, nausea can sometimes signal a problem. For instance, severe nausea and vomiting can indicate a molar pregnancy — when the placenta develops into an abnormal mass of cysts rather than becoming a viable pregnancy — or hyperemesis gravidarum, a condition that causes you to lose weight and body fluids and might require treatment with intravenous fluids and medications.

If you're concerned about morning sickness or wonder whether your morning sickness is normal, consult your health care provider.

Huh! That's interesting being that my RE, Obgyn and the high risk obgyn I've seen have all told me that it is a sign of healthy pregnancy. I think for now I'll share whatever information I chose to being that I was and am under the care of amazing doctors and sharing what they have told me. Thanks. No reason to get all sassy.

  • Angie- I am certainly not speaking for Bzeety but I think she was just trying to point out that if you don't have these symptoms, it doesn't mean that your pregnancy may be unhealthy. I am early but have been fortunate in the nausea department and I asked the docs if that meant something is wrong and they said no, you can certainly have a healthy pregnancy without morning sickness. I read the same Mayo clinic article that you posted (prior to seeing it here) and was freaking out that there was something wrong so I totally understood why she posted what she did- so others don't get freaked out.
That said, I do think its an informative article.

  • I get what your saying. I think you worded your thoughts perfectly and she should have taken the time to word her thoughts before posting her comment. It is not uncommon and ridiculous for someone to hear from their doctors that morning sickness is a sign of a healthy pregnancy. With that said, if her opinion is that this information is a myth she could have stated that many women without morning sickness go on to have healthy babies and that an absence of morning sickness doesn't mean something is wrong. There are plenty of articles that back up what my doctors have told me and I don't believe it was a wild statement to make so I'm sticking to my guns on it. I didn't post the Mayo Clinic article. Someone else did.

Evidently you missed the part of my post where I said exactly that. "is damaging to women who do not have any m/s and to women who have unhealthy pregnancies/babies who do have m/s."

I wasn't being sassy, I was being factual. What I meant by what I bolded there is that continuing to say that "m/s is a sign of a healthy pregnancy" gives women who aren't experiencing morning sickness that a reason to worry that something's wrong and gives false hope women who are experiencing it but go on to miscarry, and I think that's damaging.

Many many women do not have morning sickness and have perfectly healthy pregnancies.

Many women do have morning sickness but do not have healthy pregnancies. My best friend threw up multiple times a day with a blighted ovum that was discovered at her 12 week ultrasound. I myself felt nauseated with all of my lost pregnancies and I'm also nauseated with this healthy one too.

Like I said, I understand that it's emotionally important to feel like a pregnancy is going well. Really, I REALLY understand that. I also think it's really important, on a public board where there's a lot of worry around this topic, to keep it factual.
