3rd Trimester

Failed 1 hour GD test

I found out today that i failed the 1 hour GD test. I have to go back in tomorrow morning to do the 3 hour test. I've been told that many women that fail the 1 hour go on to pass the 3 hour. Who here has failed the 1 hour but past the 3 hour? Also if you failed the 3 hour, did you have to completely change your diet? Check your blood? What changes did you have to make?

I have done some research on GD just in case so i am prepared but would like some info from women who have had it and some advice i guess. Obviously if i do have GD i will discuss it with my Dr. and develop a plan of action. TIA

Re: Failed 1 hour GD test

  • I failed the 1 hour with DD1 but passed the 3 hour. I passed the 1 hour twice this pregnancy.

If you do fail the 3 hour there is a diet to adhere to, and you will have to monitor your blood sugar.

You might want to cross post this on the high risk board.

  • I also failed the one hour but passed the three hour.

  • I failed the one hour but passed the three hour. The nurse said that usually if you "fail" the one hour by a reasonable amount, they do the three hour to be sure whereas if you were to fail the one hour by a huge amount - the doctor might go ahead and diagnose you based on that one alone.

But don't take my word for it, it wasn't the doctor that told me that.
  • Failed 1 hour both times & passed 3 hr both times. It's common.

  • failed the one, passed the three. No requirement on me to change my diet, but since I was eating more sugar than I felt I should be anyway, it was a good wake up call to pay attention to what I was eating and I adjusted my diet a little anyway. :)

  • Failed one and failed three. I had to change my entire diet (you'll go to classes) and I draw blood 5 times a day. It is referred to as testing your glucose. It has made me bitter :-S and I miss cinnamon rolls.

  • I failed both.  I've controlled mine with diet.  Just cut out concentrated sweets and space out meals more.  I can sneak in cookies and such, as long as they are spaced away from my regular meal.  Haven't had much problems.  They let me try with just diet for 2 weeks, then had to follow up.  If they were still running high, they said meds or insulin possibly, but it never came to that.  Just had a check up today and they said everything is perfect.  It hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought.  I test in the AM and before 3 meals.

  • I was dx with GD early. I have to watch my carbs and spread my eating throughout the day. The dr will help you with the diet part. I also have to check my blood 4x per day. If diet doesn't help, you may require insulin. Don't panic if this happens (I did). It's not you, it's your body. Exercise after eating will help you lower your blood sugar. My hope is that this is useless information because you pass your 3hr. Good luck!
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • I failed the one hour but passed the three. I actually took the one hour twice because my OB thought the first test was a fluke.

    PgAL/PAL Welcome

  • I've failed the 1 hour GD test and passed the 3 hour GD test... But I did eat a pop tart the night before my 1 GD test lol, not a smart move on my part. But for the 3 hour, I just stayed away from sweets the night before my 3 hour GD test since the nurse told me that might had something to do with not passing the 1 hour. But who knows!!
  • first time around, borderline failed 1 hr and borderline failed 3 hr... was diagnosed and it was a PITA... but enjoyed the extra ultra-sounds. In the end all agreed it was a mis-diagnosis. This time around Doc told me to eat extra healthy and low-carbs a few days prior to help not get a false positive...  which has been hard since I've been on vacation... and test is tomorrow... but we'll see. thankfully this little girl craves salads...though I'm dying for a pb&j...
  • Add another for failing the one hour and passing the 3 hour.  The one hour is more of a screening so that they catch everyone.
