beds

So...my kid hates her crib. I can get her to sleep fine, then as soon as I lay her down she is up and pissed. We have a convertible crib, so I am seriously considering switching it over to a toddler bed. is that insane? I'd get a bed rail and pad the floor for when/if she falls off. I just think if I can get down and snuggle with her she would be more open to her own bed, kwim?

Re: beds

  • I think whatever you think is going to work.  Just make sure to baby proof and secure all furniture to the wall.

  • My cousin did the same thing with her daughter.  She turned 2 today and has been sleeping in a full bed since about 10 months old.  She didn't crawl or roll - went right to walking at 13 months, so it was a little easier decision.  She just refused to sleep in her crib....it was fight every night and they found she slept better in a bed.  They have side rails on two sides and have the bed in a corner.

Do what you have to do...we all need sleep!  I think it's worth a shot.

I don't know that I would be able to babyproof enough to be comfortable with this (I think the thing I'm most stuck on is the monitor...maybe if we had an outlet really high up on the wall?), but if you think you can, go for it.

You can buy outlet covers that let you plug in but cover the plug so it can't be pulled out. Or plug in behind the dresser or other furniture.

  • umm,not insane.   I thought about this too before we ferberized a few nights ago.  I think if you're comfortable enough to do it, then try it out.  Worst case scenario, you go back to a crib

  • @brookethecat I considered that.  But her crib on the toddler bed setting is only like 6 inches off the ground anyway.

  • Lol not totally insane. M just asked me the other day when we switch Cora to a toddler bed?! I was like, uhhh not anytime soon, this kid is cray!
  • L has been sleeping on a twin sized mattress on the floor since he was five months old. It is really great just for that reason. When I was breastfeeding, I would nurse him to sleep and then get up and leave. Now I feed him his bottle, wipe his teeth, stick a paci in and pat his back to help him calm down. Sometimes he'll crawl to the door to try and come out, but as long as he's not crying we don't go in. We have a video monitor so we can see what is going on. Room is totally child-proofed -- nothing he can pull up on, dresser secured to wall, outlet covers or dresser blocking outlet and only access to toys he can't choke on. Make sure ground is super clean and not dusty and his bed isn't too cold in winter (from being on the floor). We love it! He has rolled off when sleeping but it just startles him awake and the twin size is so much better because he is a mover and was hitting his head on the crib all the time. I think you should put the mattress on thr floor instead of using the toddler bed for now -- L's mattress is about four inches high. Google "Montessori floor bed" for more info/cute pictures.
