Question for lady deer hunters

Sooo I found out today I did not get drawn for a managed deer hunt in January (6 weeks after due date).  Regular deer season is mid-November.  What are the chances, if you were a betting woman, that I could fit my feet & ankles in my hunting boots @ 38 weeks?

I normally wear 7.5, but have size 8 (so I can wear extra socks & sock warmers).  They look like this, except are 900g Thinsulate:

Hubby doesn't hunt and the freezer is M-T!

Re: Question for lady deer hunters

  • I would say take this year off. Dovyou hace family that hunts?

  • Huh? You'd be full term then. Why would you risk being in the middle of the woods and going into labor?

  • Mine are slip on and pretty wide. I didn't hunt at 38 weeks though, I stopped around 34 weeks because it was getting too exhausting climbing up the stand. My guess is that you'll be too exhausted at 38 weeks unless you're in a deer/duck blind.
  • I am definitely taking this year off. I can't breathe after walking up a flight of stairs let alone hiking around the woods carrying my rifle. And even if there was no swelling, the way my feet hurt after being on them for awhile I would be miserable. Then there's the fact that my bibs won't fit me and I'd have to take everything off a million times to pee every 20 minutes lol.
  • Oh gosh.  Yeah, the peeing part could be a deal-killer, even if the boots aren't.  It might be a pumpkin patch out there with no privacy, plus cold tushie and pregnant lady hormones might keep the deer away.  The hills - also a good point.

Well, figured it was a long shot anyway. Har har. I was not successful last year and the one before I spent opening weekend in the OR having a D&C.  I was really hoping for a way to make it work this year...
  • liz429 - Unfortunately, no.

Cashingn2 - Proximity to the hospital is covered.  I have a number of options within less than an hour drive of the hospital (distance restriction set by the doc). It is not likely I would go very deep into the woods, because my stamina won't be like normal.  Plus, I would need help to get the deer out, and you're more likely to get help if it's not at the bottom of a ravine way back "yonder."

  • You're hardcore for even considering hunting at 38 weeks. The only thing I'm going to want to do at 38 weeks is sit on my couch in my jammies with a blanket, fire in the fireplace, and a mug of hot chocolate.

I'd do that now if it wasn't 80+ outside!

  • If there was any hunter hunters out there you'd be easy game.
And darn easy to spot.  Fortunately, I don't live in the same state as George Zimmerman.
    :P What a loose cannon!
  • How do you hunt, bow or gun? DH and BIL wouldn't let me go shooting with them this summer (at a range...) because the research they did was that it was bad for baby. Not 100% sure what about it though. We don't hunt, ours is for safety purposes only, but I feel your pain in missing out on venison. I wouldn't risk it at full-term anyway.

  • imrachellea - firearms/gun. I already got it cleared with my doc to go for target practice at the range.  Was worried about ear damage to little one from the sound, but he said it is very muffled in the womb and cited a number of studies that it was completely safe/not damaging to baby's hearing.
  • I think you're underestimating how much you will be suffering IF you're even still pregnant at 38 weeks. You plan on waddling around in the freezing ass woods trying to be quiet so you can hunt? I think you are crazy, and I mean that in a nice way.

I'm due the week after gun opener here. Not a chance in hell would I go deer hunting where I would be sitting in an uncomfortable stand, where I have to stay really still, at term. Forget the whole peeing thing. I would be worried I would fall asleep in the stand while holding onto my shotgun. My dad, who I hunt with, is still trying to talk me into it even though my doctor said no.

Now duck hunting? I'm doing that. Opens in less than two weeks and it is a way more comfortable setting.
  • So I haven't been hunting in years but I don't think it would be a pleasant experience. I'm not looking foward to being a bridesmaid at 37 weeks. As for the boots you'd probably be fine but the walking and climbing and peeing in the woods ug. It sucks but maybe some nice person will gift you some meat :) We always get a lot because my Uncles usually have more than they have room for.
  • I can't imagine sitting in a deer stand for any length of time at 38 weeks.

  • Yea my doc said "no way" to shooting at the range due to hearing damage to the baby. It's odd your doc advocates it. I would do more research.

  • I didn't even want to change out of my pjs and into my maternity jeans at 38 weeks.

If you're up for it and the doc says its safe, then go for it I guess.

  • I didn't even buy a hunting license this year (just fishing). I can't imagine sitting in a cold stand  pregnant shivering lol

I can't imagine being in a deer stand even not pregnant.  I'm a ground hunter; like to get up and move around every 3 hours or so.  Stay warmer that way, also.
  • Going hunting while pregnant is definitely not going to hurt the baby. It's very muffled in the womb. I've had 3 different OB's with my 3 pregnancies and they all gave me the 'go ahead'. Mine have passed the hearing test with flying colors. No studies say it's bad for baby.
