Hi Everybody,
Just wanted to introduce myself over here. It's been a wild month and I haven't been able to get online much at all, but I miss seeing how everyone is doing and wanted to see all the adorable little ones from PGAL.
Well, my water broke at work so I drove home and had DH meet me at home to grab our bags and head to the hospital. When we got there around 4 pm they pretty much just sent me on up to L&D since I would need to get set up for the IV antibiotics for GBS. I was starting to have a little bit of cramping at that point so once I was all settled in, DH actually went home for a little while to feed the pet parrots and grab something to eat since it looked like it might be awhile. Soon after he left I started to feel really nauseous, and the contractions started getting much stronger. By the time the anesthetist arrived around 7pm to discuss pain meds with me I had to leave the room to vomit. Got some anti-nausea meds then and went on the monitors for a little while to check baby's heart rate & the contractions. DH finally got back and we walked around the halls for a while and then I threw up some more. Why did no one ever mention in class or in all the well intentioned advise that you might throw up non-stop for hours? Kept on laboring and vomiting until almost midnight, when a check showed dilated to 5 and baby about 0 station. Decided to go with epidural at that point, I couldn't focus on breathing because of all the puking. Blah.
Slept for a couple of hours with the epi and more nausea meds. Another check around 4:30 or so, and we were about ready to push dialed back the epi and started pitocin. Shift changes again so we ended up starting to push around 5:30am .....and pushed for 4 hours! Midwives had me try different positions, massage, etc and said that they could see baby moving but her head just wouldn't turn around the pubic bone. Finally at about 9:30am they had the doctor come in and recommend the vacuum extraction. It sounded better than c-section, so on the first push with the vacuum we finally had our baby!
Lilah Ruby was 7lbs 2oz and 18.5". She began nursing pretty well but had to be put on a bili light the second day. This made her super sleepy and we had a hard time getting her to stay awake long enough to eat. At 4 day appointment she had dropped to 6lbs 4 oz. so we had to start supplementing with bottles of pumped milk and/or formula. It seems like all we did for the first 4 weeks was nurse or pump and try to eat or sleep. At three weeks she got back up to birth weight and we have now been weaning off the supplement bottles. On the bright side, insurance sent me a rental of a hospital grade pump, so I can use that for a while to get some milk stored now (hopefully)
It finally feels like we are getting into a routine and I hope to be able to check in and post more! Hope all you moms and babies are doing well
