Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby yogurt?

This might be a dumb question but for those of you who have given your LO yogurt, what kind did you give? Can you just give regular yogurt or is there a specific baby kind? DD is 8 months and we are starting to expand to some different foods and I wanted to give yogurt a try.

Re: Baby yogurt?

  • Our pediatrician recommended Greek yogurt. We give him the plain unflavored kind because it doesn't have any extra sugar in it, and he loves it.

  • Yoplait makes a baby yogurt.  Its made from whole milk, and comes in banana and pear flavors. LO completely loves it!
  • Our ped just recommended something made with whole milk. DD loves the Stoneyfield apple & sweet potato.

  • We started out with Stonyfield plain whole milk yogurt.  We do Yo baby now but I think there is more sugar in them?

  • The yogurt they make and market for babies actually has a lot of sugar in it.

Plain full fat yogurt is fine for a baby. It can be greek but doesn't have to be. Just watch the sugar content.

  • whole milk greek or stonyfield yogurt, plain. I usually added some fruit puree to it.
  • Natural Balkan 6% yogurt. Only ingredients are milk and active cultures. I add my own home puréed fruit. DS loves it.

  • I tried just regular whole milk yogurt and it gave DS tummy issues. Then DH went grocery shopping one day, and got the gerber kind that comes on the shelf by the baby food, and DS tears it up, and it doesn't give him any tummy issues at all :) I know it has a higher sugar rate, but it's the only way to give him yogurt without messing his belly up! :)
  • @Heyjordynhey that doesn't actually make sense.  They're both whole milk yogurts and the plain one would have LESS things to upset his stomach.  All the stuff added to the Gerber kind wouldn't counteract a reaction to the base yogurt, kwim?  Did you try the plain several times or just once (or a couple times within a few days)?  It sounds more like a fluke and I'd definitely try the plain again (and add some fruit or puree to it if you'd like to jazz it up :)

  • I tried it for about a week. I never thought about giving it to him with puree. What kind should i give him? I've looked at the yogurt section and it just overwhelms me! And that gerber yogurt is expensive! :P
  • Stonyfield makes a whole milk organic yogurt.  Just make sure you get plain and not vanilla because the vanilla is really high in sugar.

  • Yeah, I'd try regular yogurt again as well. The Gerber stuff is full of things I don't think a little baby needs. I mean it doesn't come refrigerated. I know for our son he has a sensitivity to dairy so he does full fat goat milk yogurt.
