Working Moms

How much do you spend on...

Jackets for your children?

I just drop $60 on a winter coat for DD. it was reduced from $130 which is great but she will get at most one year wear out of it obviously.

Then there were the $30 rain boots, also on sale...

Curious to hear what other working moms spend?

Re: How much do you spend on...

  • $40 sounds about right for us. $130 is what I spend for myself but then I'm not growing....

  • I'd say around $30-$40 but they each get 2 of them usually...a snow type one and then another one that is more like comfortable/cozy style. Last year my mom got DS a leather bomber from the gap that I thought was a bit frivolous and it was his total favorite & the only one he would wear (he hated the snow one I got him)...This year I got them both new coats at a trunk sale type thing and they will both still fit in the Columbia snow ones I got them last year. FIgure next year they might still fit in the new ones from this year & I'll get new snow ones... etc.
  • I buy Them used. So about $10 and then 5 or 10 to dry clean

That never even crossed my mind.  Just because I can afford new doesn't mean I should pay for new right? I'm going to check out the consignment place.

  • I'll check out our local consignment too in the future. We live in the desert but I really want to take dd up to play in the snow this winter. I hate cold weather. Clearly I'm not thinking this through.

Thanks for sharing. Clearly this is one area I need to scale back on
  • So far I haven't had to buy one (thanks to the little boy across the street!) but I'd pay up to $60 if I was in a cold climate.

We are not so layering with a good sweatshirt would suffice where I am.
  • I like the $60 3-in-1 jackets from The Children's Place and I buy it when there's a great coupon.  He wears the fleece daily due to no bulky coats in the car seat rule and then we use the outer portion for outdoor play over the fleece.

  • I buy winter boots and coats at consignment. I live in a cold climate where you need good stuff, and I always find great quality hardly worn items.
  • I have been lucky in getting hand me downs so far, but this year I'll be checking out consignment stores.

  • I spent $12 on a winter coat and snow pants set for DD.  I bought it last year at a consignment shop.  It is Carter's brand and is in great condition.  I also bought DD a dressier wool coat from the same consignment shop for $15.  It is Janie and Jack.  The consignment shop by me always has really great things.

  • DS does not like thick, puffy jackets.  I found a nice, lightweight winter jacket and a warm fleece at Target last fall.  I think they were about $20-$25 each.  Both still look perfect after being worn a lot.  I might keep them for DD, even though they are blue :)
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • I usually get them at Children's place, they are $60, but between sales and coupons I probably get it for about half that. Snowpants are about $20. I don't mind spending the money on a coat since they will wear it every day.

  • I spent $50 total on a 3in1 winter coat, snow pants and boots that ended up getting DS through two winters. Found this year's coat on sale this past spring for less than $20. Will probably end up spending about $20 each on new snow pants and boots.
  • I just bought her a new winter coat for $30 on sale.  It is Carter's. I easily spend $30-40 on a pair of shoes for her several times per year.

Winter coats? I think I bought one of those 3 in 1's  from the children's place when we traveled to somewhere cold with DS1 for Christmas and paid $20 for it. Is that considered a winter coat??

Otherwise, we spend $10-$15 on a couple of hoodies- lol.

  • $30 usually from Old Navy.  An additional $5-$10 each for a fleece jacket and hat/mittens.

  • Consignment store for the parka (North Dakota). We bought the boots new last year and I think they were $30.

  • $50-$60.  We live in Wisconsin, so winter jackets get a lot of wear.  I don't mind spending money on a good jacket that DS will spend a lot of time in.

Last year he actually had two jackets from BabyGap.  A snow jacket and a more stylish cold weather jacket.

  • Going to a consignment sale at the end of the month for fall & winter clothes - will let you know but we generally spend $50ish for each lot of clothing we buy at consignments.

However, I did just drop $50 on the next size of shoes for DD. Stride Rite is half off on Zulily today folks!

  • I spent $30 on Zulily for a snow parka and matching snow pants set.  I bought them in 2T, but honestly, I have no idea if they'll fit.  She's an itty bitty 15 month old - she wears 18 month footie pjs, but still fits into 9 month cardigans.  I thought bigger would be better than smaller, but I don't want her swimming in the thing.

We have a great consignment store near us that I'll hit up for a nice peacoat.

  • Depends, sometimes I go to Childrens Place with coupon and other times if I see a good deal on a vineyard vines coat I jump on it.

He's a slow grower so last winters VV coat will probably fit this winter as well or at least first half of it.
  • I just bought DS a winter coat off Zulily for $18.99.  At this age - where he doesn't really play in the snow for hours at a time and I won't put the coat on him in the car since he's in a carseat - he will wear the coat minimally so $20-$25 is the max I would spend.  But, I'll probably also spend about the same amount on a nice fleece zip up for him, which he will wear a lot more.

For the same reason, I'll probably get him a cheapo pair of rain boots and/or snow boots and snow pants.  When he's older and will get more use out of these items, I'd probably invest a bit more in them.

  • I'd say about $30-40 for a Target parka and then I try to get a dressier coat (pea coat or similar) from Old Navy or Gap. I usually try find those on sale and won't spend more than $30 or so. Last year I got DD1 a Fall coat on sale at ON for about $12. DD2 wear all of DD1's out grown coats, so I guess I shouldn't feel too bad spending more $$ on them?

This is my first winter with DS but I got a puffy jacket with snow pants and a thermal shirt for $22.99 on Zulily. Granted he's still a baby and won't be playing in the snow but the jacket will keep him snugly
  • I scored big last winter and got the coat with the snow pants underneath by Carter's for $3 on clearance. I will got one for this year and next. But she will only use it outside of her car seat because it is way too puffy. I am buying her a north face style probably the ones from target for the car seat.

  • For sure on the consignment shops. Also in my area there are a few churches that have resales twice in the year (spring for summer clothes and fall for winter clothes) I bought a really nice Old Navy snow jacket for $5. I am not a big garage saler- but there is one each spring and I know the people really well- and usually stock up on stuff there every year too. Saves a ton of money- and they grow out of stuff so fast it's crazy!

  • I buy mine at consignment stores as well.  I just got a baby gap winter coat for $11 and a Columbia coat for $12 snow pants for $7.  I usually wait until it's actually cold to find something and I don't like the selection.  This year I went at the middle of August (on a 99 degree day!) and I thought the selection was great.  A lot more name brands still available than later on.
Also they have a pretty good selection of Halloween costumes right now too if you are searching for one of those.
  • I also shop consignment for winter coats!  I got DS an awesome 3-in-1 Columbia coat in great condition last year for $16!  We're in Chicago and I'm pretty sure it'll fit him through at least the first half of this season.  I always looks for snow pants at Goodwill.  I'm not willing to spend much on something he will only wear for a few months.

  • I get them handed down from other families and its been great!

  • So far DS1 is still wearing the fleece car seat ponchos that Grandma made. He should get another year out of those. DS2 will not need a coat as long as he is in the infant seat as we can use the fleece seat cover.

Once they get to typical coats, we won't spend much. I will likely buy as much as possible at garage sales or thrift stores until we can't find ones to fit.

Since they cannot wear the typical puffy winter coats in their car seats, I want to avoid them as long as possible. I may just do a thin fleece jacket or pullover in the car that can be left on and the bulky jacket only for school and outside play time.

I'd probably be willing to spend up to $50 on the fleece jackets as I can buy a little big to hopefully get two years out of it for each of the boys.
  • I like the children place 3 in 1 jackets. His first one for hi through two winters and I picked up one for this year at the outlet on sale so spent maybe $20. Usually wear the fleece part starting. The fall and when it get colder add the outer part.

I get hand-me-downs, but if I had to buy something I would either go to the consignment store or to Old Navy. I do both when I need extra things to supplement what we get from my nephew.

Kids out-grow clothing so quickly during the early years that I'm not spending "real" money on their clothes until they're well into elementary school.

  • Land's End on sale (I buy the next year's coat in spring), I think it's around $30. Also, my younger son will wear it eventually, and DS1 is big enough that one coat might actually fit him for two winters. Consignment is good, too!
