Hands free pumping bra

Ok STMs... I've heard this mentioned on here a few times so I had to look it up.

How the heck is this useful?! Clearly you'd see this over clothing? Not to mention it looks ridiculous. Please enlighten me- I'm super intrigued and want to be a believer!

Re: Hands free pumping bra

  • the only way i could see someone using it is perhaps while they get ready for work in the morning? or if you have a personal space to eat lunch?

    cause yeah, it's looks crazypants

  • From what I understand, it's basically so you can have both hands free while you pump vs having to hold the cups flush to your breasts. It's not meant to be discreet. ;-) I'm planning on getting one so I can type on my laptop while I pump (I have my own office, though ill need to film my glass). And I hate to say this, but if I can get the hang of it, for while Im driving. I travel extensively locally for work, and a number of women I know who do the same claim it's possible! I'll obviously throw a nursing shawl over top for that!

I assumed this, too, when I saw one of these at Babies R' Us the other day. Makes sense if you are needing pump while keeping your hands free, but I'm not sure how free they would be when the bottle fills up and that weird cow bra thing starts to get uncomfortable.

  • I want to add ten of these to my registry as purchased just to confuse my family/friends.
  • You don't wear it all of the time.  Just when you're pumping.  It's the greatest thing!  Holding 2 bottles to your boobs for 20 minutes is not fun or productive.  When you're hands are free you can type or attend to a crying baby

This.  It makes pumping not as much of a chore.
  • I would only put my pumping on bra when I was about to pump at work.  I would wear a nursing tank and would put the bra with pumps over the nursing tank. I wouldn't wear it all day.  It was awesome to have my hands free to check email/do work while pumping. It also offered more coverage that just the pump.  If someone walked in, the bra would mostly cover you up.  The only visible thing is your nipples in the suction tubes.

You'd let people walk in and see your nipples in suction at work with this thing?!?!
  • I actually plan on getting one. I'm almost done with my degree and after LO is here ill finish up with online classes. This would help.
  • I used one too. much easier than holding the pump in each hand. I was able to multitask.
  • Lol! If you pump a lot you get SUPER board. I used this so I could have my hands free for a book, my phone, or my laptop, or even entertain the baby while he sat beside me if we were home alone. EPing really sucked.

  • Oh and the ones I had there was no way I could walk around with it on, I still had to balance the bottom of the bottles on my lap or it would just lose suction and just fall right off my nipples and spill everywhere.

  • 1) You don't wear it all the time, you only wear it during pumping, and you put it over a regular nursing bra, you unhook it then zip the handsfree bra on over it

    2) It's a complete lifesaver unless you prefer sitting in one spot with both hands holding pump parts further making you feel like a milk cow

3)If you plan to use a phone, a laptop or read anything while you pump you'll need one.  Pump parts are a HUGE PITA, and this is actually one of the most helpful things I bought.

    4) Yes it looks ridiculous, but how many people do you plan to allow audience you pumping??

  • I "converted" my Pump In Style to hands free while pumping at work if I was on my laptop, and even when I was stuck with DD sleeping in my arms (because she would notoriously wake when I'd put her down).

I imagine some people have difficulty finding a private space to pump at work (I know I did).

  • Oh wow the first couple of comments. These are amazing.

Girls understand without this you are holding two cups to both breast for twenty mins or more, plus turn on the pump with the third hand to maintain suction.

You wear this to hold the shields to your breast. You plan on bf'ing, get use to looking like a cow.

I don't know how many times moo'ing to my DS made me laugh just for sanity. lol

Also these are ridic. expensive. You can get a cheep sports bra and cut a hole the size of a nickle at the nipples and viola hands free nursing bra, just run the shield through the holes.

You will need something like this especially if you go back to work.

  • Here's a use for those old Bella Bands, cut tiny slits in them and use them over the girls as a hands free pumping bra. You can wear it around you waist all day if you don't want to wrangle it over your head for pumping time.

I did have a pumping bra but used it only at home. I used the Bella Band method at work because it was easier for me.

I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

Totally! I was in an office with a sign on the door and people STILL walked in. UGH! Luckily we have new offices that include a lactation room with a fridge, sink and microwave. Only lactating ladies get a key. I feel VERY fortunate.

  • Any ladies with bigger boobies use this? I think I read the packaging in store when I was nursing DS and I got the impression that it wouldn't work if you have big bosoms.

I'd never be able to use this at work since every second counts as I have to pump during recess (15 mins). It looks like it might take a few mins to get that puppy set up properly. I might not mind it for home, though I did become quite skilled at balancing the bottles for a daring hands-free experience.

Yes.  My Target sports bra with holes in it was the thing that kept me sane while I pumped.  It may look silly, but it is completely necessary unless you're ok with sitting there doing nothing but holding bottles several times per day.

  • The pumping bras are good but a sports bra with holes cut in it sometimes fits a little tighter - since the pumping bras only come I'm a few sizes they aren't perfect for everyone!

  • It's the most amazing pumping tool EVER.  Take off/push up your bra/shirt, however you are most comfortable, stick the pump horns in the bra holes, strap it on, and you have your hands free to rock your baby, use the computer, get ready for work, drive, whatever.  I EPed and used to pump and feed DS at the same time--it saved a lot of time when I was up at 3 am for a feeding.

As some people said, a sports bra with little holes work better for some people and some pumps (the assembly of the Ameda wouldn't work with little holes in a sports bra, but the Medela horns would).

I admit I had tears I was laughing so hard the first time I saw that picture, though.

  • Seriously, ridiculous as they look, those things are awesome.  I was able to pump in my office at work for 9 months and kept right on working at my desk, so I didn't have to take a break to pump 3 times per day.  If you are going to work and pump, I'd say this is a must have.

@iwubrory It works fine with bigger boobs.  I got the "simple wishes" one from amazon and it is infinitely adjustable to get a really snug fit and hold everything in place.  There is velcro in the back to get the perfect fit, and then a zipper in the front so there is no struggling to get it over your head.  It even provides some compression to help get more milk out.  You just pull up your shirt, pull down the cups on a nursing bra, strap this thing over the top and you're good to go.

Same here.  No one reads anything.  If they do, they still knock and walk in.

We have a Lactation Room across the hall! Woot!
Awesome!  I'm jealous.  We have lactation rooms across campus, but nowhere near my building.  I'm going to have to sneak in between conference room meetings and in vacant postdoc offices. Sometimes I think my car would be easier :(

  • I never had one with DD, but I totally see the appeal! Oh and auctioning nipples is so freaky! DH was like I'm going to be south rougher with you. Haha!
I only had one side pump so I had one hand free but lost 10 minutes. If you knit you can knit and pump!

Until this moment, I NEVER thought about doing them at the same time.  Feeding and PUmping at the same time? Dude, I could get an extra half hour of sleep.  Who says you can't learn new tricks?

  • I love my PumpEase! It's the same idea as this bra but it's way cuter. I like to have  my hands free while I pump so I can do other stuff - mostly type at the computer but I've also washed dishes while pumping :) I don't wear mine all the time - I just pop it on when I want to pump and take it off after. I keep it in my wet bag with all my pump parts.

When he was little enough, he fit on my lap; when he got bigger, I put him in the Boppy on the couch next to me.  :)
