Most annoying toy? (Rusalka)

While I was away for a few days, DH was visiting with some of his family and DD got two new toys from his cousin, both of which are annoying as hell. The Vtech Catch Me Kitty is getting donated because she doesn't much care for it, but she also got this big monstrosity of a train. It's the LeapFrog alphabet train, and it doesn't have an off switch. COME ON. Toys with no off switch? Who makes this stuff? But she likes crawling over to it and pressing buttons and bopping along, so I can't bring myself to get rid of it.

What's the most annoying toy(s) your LO likes?

  • DD has that kitty too! It is very annoying! She doesn't care for it much either so we probably won't keep it.

I sing it in my sleep. It has an off switch and I'd just keep it off all the time but when it's not on they look at me like "hey? what's with the lizard today???"
    :-?
bwahahhahah!  I can totally picture that look!

So far we haven't had any toys that are being put in the donate pile but we only have a couple that make noise.  I'm avoiding them as long as possible!
I never buy the stuff and try to share as much information as is not annoying on my Facebook page about how children learn from simple objects, so, I was really impressed when she didn't get any irritating crap for her birthday. It was the belated gifts that did us in...

I remember your post shortly before her birthday asking for advice on how you could gently let others know you don't want a bunch of girly toys and stuff. Now that Harper's birthday is nearing I wish I could figure out a way to say that we prefer "educational toys only" - like books or puzzles.
Honestly, I never said anything directly beyond including a line in the Facebook event I created that she liked books, blocks, and animals (and I said folks didn't have to bring gifts, if they didn't want to). And I do try to share articles now and then that really resonate with me about kids and play and gender stuff, which I think my friends and family have come to expect (and maybe dread). Either way, everyone was extremely awesome on her birthday. She didn't get a single thing that required batteries, and she didn't get anything overtly girly, either. I am really grateful to everyone for trying to respect the way we want to raise her.

  • DS was given a sponge bob birthday card for his party back in June.. When you open it, sponge bob sings happy birthday.. I hate sponge bob.. We NEVER watch it.. But, DS loved this card, so I let him keep it... Except the dang card became a favorite!!! He would open and close that card for oh hours a day!!! Like others said, I could hear it in my sleep!! One night I said to DH when is that battery gong to die!!! It's a card, not a toy!! And then, it happened.. It stopped working and I. Felt SOOO bad!! DS would open it and close it and open it and close it and just had the saddest expression on his face because it wasn't singing anymore!!! I went to buy it for him again but it was $12!!! $12 for a birthday card!!! That's insane.. Thankfully, DS forgot about it!!

Oh, so cute! DD was playing with a birthday card at my best friend's mom's house - her surrogate grandma, practically - and it played a song and she LOVED it. Open and close, open and close. I could see how that could get old if it were in my house!

  • DS was given a Playskool guitar for his birthday last year. It sounds like something bad from the 80s.

  • I'm not nearly as annoyed by noisy toys as I thought I would be but I think our most annoying toy is probably a Fisher Price bowling game with a ball that looks like a cow and moos when it moves.  It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that the noisy motion-detecting toy is a BALL.  The slightest indvertent bump and a round object is sure to move, filling our living room with barnyard sounds.  I could turn it off but I feel bad when DS picks up his noise-making toys and can't get them to work because someone turned it off.

  • All of the ones that make noise drive me BSC. I feel horrible about it becasue he will dance with them and it is way too super cute, but the noise is like razor blades in my brain. Repetitious things drive me bonkers!

  • I have honestly gotten rid of almost everything with batteries. My SIL got her this little picnic basket shape sorter that sings, but it's not terribly annoying, and I leave it off most of the time. But I'm not remorseful about the things we've given away. I always try to buy her a different toy instead.

  • I hate toys that require batteries. I hate throwing out batteries so I put them in a box and take them someplace to be recycled. After DS turned 1, I had a full shoebox of batteries.  When DD was born I started buying rechargeable then I find out some things just suck the life out of these batteries like the swing (lasted three days) and it was a PITA to have to pull out the charger and unscrew the lids off these items.
