A few years ago we shopped around car insurance companies and got a really good rate because we had no tickets or accidents. Well, FF a few years, and DH gets two speeding tickets in two years. After the first ticket, they raised our rates by a couple hundred dollars a year. Yesterday we get a letter that due to the ticket DH got last year they are raising our rates another 32% to $1,300/year. I know that tickets make us more high risk drivers, but isn't that a ridiculous amount of money to pay a year? Oh, and DH has a company car that is insured through his company, so this is just for him to be a secondary driver on my vehicle. We have had no accidents and no insurance claims in the entire time we have been with them (knock on wood)...
I am thinking it is time to shop around again but thought I'd do a sanity check here to see if other people are paying similar amounts, or if this is crazy.
Re: 50% increase in car insurance in two years! (NWMR)
I actually work for a pretty big insurance company and unfortunately the only real answer is that is does vary a lot between companies. Switching to a company that deals more in "high risk" might get you a lower rate but once those tickets are three years old and don't really "count" anymore you might be paying more w/ that company than you would with another that's not as "high risk."
You'll have to keep in mind though that if you have longevity with your insurance company little oopsies don't affect your rate quote as much. If you are w/ your insurance company for 10yrs for example and have 2 tickets that is much more tolerable than if you've been with your insurance company for 2 years and have had 2 tickets.
I know this isn't super helpful since it doesn't answer your question, but I thought the information might help in your decision to stay with your current company or not

We pay something ridiculous like $1600/year for a 2008 truck and 2009 midsized car. We've had to file several claims in the last couple years (2 hit and run parking lot incidents and then someone stole all the wheels off our truck) and DH got a speeding ticket a couple years ago.
So $1300 sounds awesome to me.
We're just a magnet for bad car juju.
