Migraines during pregnancy

So Sunday evening went to bed with a pounding headache headache and woke up early yesterday with a massive migraine. Called the OB and they told me to take 600mg of ibuprofen, but that only took edge off... so still suffering now. Called my family doctor aand Im going in. Not sure what they can do for me, but I need to get back to work and my normal routine. I was trying to save my sick time for that stupid 6 weeks unpaid maternity... the doctor knows I am 15 weeks pregnant.

  • Pregnant or not, when I get a really bad migraine I get an ice pack or two and a wet washcloth.
One ice pack on my forehead, one on the back of my neck, the washcloth over my eyes. If possibly, a quiet room, dark if possible, lay down and just keep the ice and cloth on.
It may not go away completely, but I give it a couple hours, drink a glass of water or juice and do it again.

Going to try this.  I get them about 1 in every 2 days.  To the point where I would normally take advil/tylenol/ANYTHING (and I don't take medication very often at all), but I'm avoiding it with pregnancy.  Not wanting to be taking drugs every 2 days, yah know? Your method sounds good, I have 2 ice packs in the freezer now.  I feel alright today but that means I can expect it tomorrow! THANKS!

  • I've been taking excedrin tension headache. It doesn't have aspirin, just caffeine and acetominophen. Usually works for me and I've had a migraine every day for the past week. Also make sure it's not your sinuses. If it might be, try a neti pot or a steaming hot shower. I fell your pain, my week has been horrendous
  • My dr prescribed Butalb- it's basically acetaminophen+caffeine. It can be habit forming, but increased nausea from a migraine (plus the inability to even open my eyes) makes me non-functional so I do take it when nothing else works.

  • Your doctor told you to take ibuprofen?! Wow, my doctor is pretty liberal about most things. But she told me to never ever take Ibuprofen while pregnant. She gave me Tylenol 3 instead, and told me I could try imitrex. She used to teach pharmacology so I trust what she says about meds. I'd do some research on the ibuprofen. From everything I've read it says its one of the most dangerous things you can take.
  • I've had the most gnarly headaches since I've been preggo. Ugh. Just awful. Mine were like the entirety of week 10 or 11. And then they went away. But yeah I was going to bed with them, waking up in the morning...nothing helped....

Though tylenol and caffeine helped a little bit but didn't make it totally go away...

  • I definitely feel your pain!  I've had more migraines during this pregnancy than I normally get in several months.  My OB told it was okay to take Maxalt and even refilled my prescription.

  • She told me that as long as it isn't past 24 weeks or before 10 weeks I can take ibuprofen. I was told NO to Maxalt though... they ended up giving me Oxycodone which seems to be helping. That is a Cat B...

  • I was told no to maxalt but yes to imitrex. I've taken both pre pregnancy. She said imitrex but only in pill form. And that is for when I go blind from the migraine. And that ibuprofen might cause miscarriage prior to 20 weeks and after that can stop the baby's heart. I've only taken the Tylenol 3.
  • My OB gave me a rx for Tylenol 3. It's not even touching my migraines. I'm miserable.

  • I've heard putting a cold pack on your neck while your hands and feet are in warm water helps relieve migraines naturally.
  • Tylenol does nothing for me so I drank a cup of coffee & it subsided a few hours later. I normally only get help from excedrin migraine but I avoid meds when prego. The heat wave from this past weekend had mine lingering since Saturday. I wish I wouldn't get them like during my first pregnancy:/ Hope you find something to help.
  • Eek I'm glad I only took 600mg then. I have an appointment tomorrow with my midwife that is at the same practice as the OB. When she told me I could take it I was like "what?".

  • I have a history of migraines and they've only gotten more frequent since I got pregnant. Not much helps when they hit me - I usually have to wait it out. I started seeing a chiropractor and that has helped a lot! He also suggested that I try to drink more water when I feel a migraine coming on because even the slightest bit of dehydration can cause a headache. It's not for everyone but I do recommend a visit to the chiropractor.
