BLW- how to start?

In light of DC2's post about Tuesday questions, here goes!  I started with purees.  By started, I mean we have had about 3 meals.  She is definitely ready, but the more I read the more I am interested in BLW.  I kind of want to do a combo approach, some purees and some finger foods...is that allowed?  What are good foods to start with?  Do I still serve the same food for 3-4 days with BLW to check for allergies?  Any recommendations on resources for starting this or just suggestions based on your own experiences?

Re: BLW- how to start?

  • You can do whatever you want! Check out www.babyledweaning.com for tons of good info.

My advice is to cut the food (whatever it may be) into french fry size pieces. That way LO can grab it easily but there's still a good amount sticking out that she can bite. Examples: steamed carrots, broccoli, strips of toast w/ pureed fruit or hummus on top, avocado slices, tomato slices, whatever you can think of!

This morning DS went nuts over cantaloupe. I gave him small pieces and he sucked and gnawed them until they were gone. He seriously ate like 6 little bite-size pieces.

I don't worry too much about introducing one food at a time, but maybe I should? We don't have any food allergies in my family, though, so I'm not too worried. Plus he's EBF. Knock on wood!

Also, my last advice is not to get freaked out by the gagging. There's lots of gagging. Especially in the beginning. And it's totally normal. A baby's gag reflex is further forward than an adult's so it's a built-in anti-choking mechanism! Cool, huh? If you let her gag it up, she'll start to learn how to handle the food in her mouth and very quickly there will be less gagging and you won't have to worry so much about choking!

Have fun! BLW is sooooo fun. :) I love it.

  • Thanks ladies! DC- she has had sweet potatoes and we tried peas today but really we just spat them out. Am I supposed to be poised and ready to finger sweep at any moment with this method?

  • I was at first, but now he's so good at handling food that I don't worry so much about it. I'm always right there, usually eating too, in case he does need a little help, but mostly he does great on his own.
