Cloth Feminine Pads

I never, ever thought I'd be remotely interested, but seeing as how I felt similarly about CD, I'm starting to look into going down this road as well.

What are the basics I need to know?  (I literally JUST started researching...)

What was your reason for using it?

What brand do you use?

Can I wash them with my CDs?

What else should I be aware of?

Re: Cloth Feminine Pads

  • They're not too complicated. I started using them when my daughter was born and we started using CDs. I don't like tampons and regular pads have always kind of irritated me. Plus they're cost effective, eco-friedly, all the usual reasons. I use domino pads and  really like them. I haven't had any leak or smell issues. I wish them with CDs. When DD is potty trained I'll wash them with all the same settings I use for CDs but with a load of towels, since towels are so resilient.

  • I loved mine for a very long time. I ended up making my own and used them for years (pre-baby). I rinsed them and threw them in with the baby's wipes as I wash wipes and CDs in two separate loads. Before baby I just washed with towels.

You may also want to check into cups. I have a Lunette that took a few days to master but I love it so much more than cloth pads on heavy days.

  • I started using them after DD was born when I started becoming more green. I don't like the idea of throwing money away or putting chemicals in my body. I bought some from Cowpatties Cloth Diapers and I love them. I wash them with towels or cloth diapers.

  • I just started to look into these myself. I noticed them when I was buying cloth diapers for DS. Charlie Banana makes them and I am going to order some to give a try I really like how soft his diaper inserts and diapers are so I think it is a good indicator of how this product will be.

  • I bought all of mine through this etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/ecoAlternatives?ref=l2-shopheader-name just over a year ago. I love them! I originally bought them because more eco friendly and much less expensive. I used rockin green's cloth pad detergent https://www.amazon.com/Rockin-Green-Femme-Menstrual-Detergent/dp/B0069DEBP2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378055846&sr=8-1&keywords=rockin+green+cloth+pad  . I'm sure you could wash them with your cloth diapers. I store them in a med. planet wise wet/dry bag and when I'm using them I just hang the wet bag on my toilet paper dispenser.

  • I have used cloth pads for years and a Diva Cup with them on and off.  I love them and started using them because I was getting chronic yeast infections.  I litterally tried everything to get rid of them but after having an infection for most of my honeymoon and the first month of my marriage I said enough was enough and started looking at alternative ideas for why I was getting them.  It turns out that the bleach they use on the cotton of disposible pads can cause infections in some women.  I switched to cloth pads (I order from various people on easy) and have litterally not had an issue since switching.  I just throw them in with regular wash cycles and have had no issue with blood getting on anything else.  I do rinse them off in cold water in the sink after use before putting in a metal basket with a cloth liner I keep under the sink.  I have a pretty small stash (about 7 pads of various thicknesses) that I spent maybe $60 on and have not had any issue.  I also use the Diva Cup when my period is heaviest and that helps keep me from having to do laundry to get through my period.
I am planning on making my own post pardum pads though as I feel like I need more thicker pads than I have now and also know I will be super tired after the baby is born and may not be able to stay on top of the laundry as well.  I got some PUL fabric from Jo-Anns in the section they have for making you own cloth diapers and plan to follow these directions.
  • I've tried a few different brands of cloth pads and Lunapads were my favorite by far.  I primarily use a Diva Cup, but use the pads as a back up or at the end of my period.

  • I LOVE my Diva Cup and Lunette menstrual cup! I also have Willow Pads and some homemade cloth ones. The Willow Pads wrap around and snap to underwear, my homemade ones look like long pantyliners and I pin them to my underwear.

I have urethritis (I always feel like I have a UTI, but there's no bacteria) and wearing tampons or disposable pads made my symptoms so much worse. I wash them with our towels.

I will probably use disposables postpartum, however, at least for the first few days when there is so much blood.

I started using cloth pads when my DD was born and we started doing cloth diapers with her.  I've had a diaper pail going since then though now I'll just toss them in with my regular laundry too.

I don't do anything special with them.  I use them, toss them in the laundry, and wash them.  I probably have 15-20 of them and rarely use them all before more are clean so I could have gotten away with less.

I like wings with snaps and I don't like the ones I have lined with minky as it makes me sweat.  I like best the flannel lined ones.  I like 9-12" long ones.  Some of each for different uses (day/night).
