Baby only sleeps on tummy

My 8 weeks old son on sleeps on his tummy now.  he refuses to sleep on his back unless he falls asleep in his swing.  If we put him on his back in his crib he will wake up within 30 minutes b/c his arms come loose and he does this swimming motion.  My question is - is this safe?  What can I do to get him to sleep on his back again?

Re: Baby only sleeps on tummy

  • Try seeing if he'll sleep on his side for a while? I lay mine down on his side so that he won't end up with a flat head...but when he's wiggling around to get comfortable, he always rolls to his back during the night. Sometimes when he's napping, I'll just put him on the couch next to me on his side so that the couch helps support his back and when he's wiggling, he'll end up at about a 45 degree angle laying on his back. Try it during a nap time when you're close by to watch for patterns though because while my little guy almost always rolls to his back, one time he did roll forward which I had to help him correct because he was swaddled and that's not safe!

  • My 6 week old twins will only sleep on their tummies too. They have really good control of their heads and necks which helps me not to worry about them as much. My sister in law's son is 6 months old and he sleeps on his tummy too- they've never had any problems. So you're no alive in this!
