LO is 38 weeks and is 39 weeks this Thursday so in three days, he is gaining really well his first week home in 6 days he had gained 12 oz. he is on neosure and I give him breastmilk with the neosure. He will sometimes spit up on the 60 cc but here is where it gets weird. Last night I was way out of it and when he started crying I gave him his entire bottle in an hour and a half after his previous feeding, no spit up! then 3 and a half hours later ate again, and he is acting hungry every two hours after a feeding. So today during on of his feedings i figured id try going up again so i went to 70 did fine also. He is on the every 3 hrs schedule. My question is will my LO know when he is hungry and not hungry, i feel like my LO will eat whatever I put in his mouth. He is eating on his hand a lot and everyone who has had children tell me that he is hungry, and I'm so afraid to get him off his schedule so he doesn't get aspiration in the lungs, but I don't want my baby to go hungry. I normally just rock him give him his pacifier and try to let him sleep til that next hour is up! If I just fed him whenever, would he know when to stop eating so as to not over eat? I'm so frustrated for him. He also has acid reflux too. I also wonder if that has something to do with it, but he isn't on meds for t bc he doesn't have a severe case of acid reflux, it's 2 cc of spit up once a dayish, some days none. A lot f gurgle noises. But any advice?!

  • I would definitely seek reassurance from your pedi, but I am under the impression that a baby (especially a baby with reflux) will let you know when he has had too much to eat because he will be spitting up. If he is really hungry, he probably won't be content with just a pacifier.

To me, he sounds like he is ready to move from the every 3 hours schedule to feeding on demand. This means you would feed him whenever he shows signs of hunger, until he decides he is done. It's hard initially to get off of the NICU schedule but he'll develop his own schedule! (or not, lol. Sometimes every day is different!)
