c-section question

Last week, some co-workers and I were talking about c-sections.  I was telling them how terrified I was of being awake for the c-section (was knocked out for first because it was a life threatening emergency).  One co-worker said she was given an anti-anxiety of some sort before all 3 of her c-sections because she's high strung like I am (however, her youngest is something like 14 yo).  I'm wondering if any of you ladies have any experience with this?  Is this a reality?  Can I ask for something to help calm my nerves?  Is it dependent on the OB?

Curious!  Thanks!

ETA: This is something I plan to ask at my new appt. on Oct. 4th.

Re: c-section question

  • I don't have c-section experience, but I was WIDE awake for my cerclage. I told the anesthesia (OMG! Just spelled that right one the FIRST try) team that I was going to freak out. They said not to worry- they had good drugs in their pockets. They started giving me a sedative when my spinal was being placed. I asked if they would do this for a c-section too- they said all I had to do was ask.

yep, they can definitely give you something. My anesthesiologist joked that I was so calm, he couldn't believe how low/stable my blood pressure was. He said he usually has the anti-anxieties ready b/c it IS a nerve wracking experience :)

Talk to your OB for sure (obviously), but it's definitely not unheard of.

  • I was so terrified during my first one that I couldn't even speak! They never gave me anything for the anxiety. I was really over anxious though, it wasn't a big deal and i was really relaxed through my second one.

  • I think you just have to ask...bring it up with your OB next visit just to get the ball rolling! ;)
  • I don't want anything that would cloud my experience. With DD, I made it all the way to 10cms before I had to have an emergency c-section and was given something and everything is a blur. I want to be lucid during the procedure. Especially with the twins. But I'm sure they can give you something.

  • My anesthesiologist was AMAZING! (in fact thinking of him made me call my doctors office just now & request him for this RCS too) I was worried and anxious and he told me just to tell him everything that was happening & that he'd have a cure for that... and he did! I felt ill & started throwing up & 2 seconds later, he fixed it... I felt itchy, boom he fixed it... He really did make my experience 10x better! So just remember they've done this rodeo a time or two ;) and as he said, he's the medicine man, so he's got a cure for that!
  • I am an OR nurse and had an unplanned c-section with my first. Though I had an epidural, I still felt them "rummaging" around in my belly so they gave me a couple of wonderful drugs: versed and a little propofol. If you are anxious, more than likely, they will give you versed. You will be awake, able to communicate and follow orders. You may not remember much though! For example: apparently I named my baby Damien when I first saw him. I don't remember this at all but I remember everything else!

I tried to make a ticker signature but I failed. I am boring. My c-section will be on 12-19-13
