Peas

If I want to make a purée using fresh peas and not frozen ones, what type of peas am I supposed to use? Snap peas? Green peas? Are they all the same? And are green beans okay at 6 months too?

Re: Peas

  • I've been wondering this too! I can only seem to find snap peas in my produce depts! I really want to do peas next but frozen seems to be the only option for green peas.

  • I tried with green peas from my produce department and the puree didn't come out nearly as tasty as with the frozen ones. I found it much less sweet and really starchy. I think they get "overripe" easily.

Good to know! My local produce dept doesn't even have green peas, and the snap peas aren't organic. Guess frozen is the way to go for peas!
  • I made pureed peas for the first time today.  I used frozen organic ones and it turned out really well.  I hope DS likes them.

  • Dont know much about this but the book I am reading suggested frozen peas as being the most nutritious because they are frozen at their peak? That's the book though, not me. I'm completely oblivious about solids.

So, I just bought a book called "Bebe Gourmet" (which I love!) and the book says that green peas are suitable for 4+ months, but that snap peas are suitable for 12+ months.  I still don't know the difference (other than that green peas are more nutritious), but I guess we should stick with green peas for now!  Also, the Whole Foods website says that 95% of all green peas are frozen, so maybe frozen really is the best option.  HTH!
