My daughter is 13 months and we would love to have her off the bottle. I have been trying various kinds of sippy cups but she wont drink more than 3-4 oz of milk in a sippy. It has become very frustrating. I have spent about $50 on sippy cups to find the right one and she still won't finish it.She uses a sippy cup to drink water all the time. Any suggestions as to how to make this transition? FYI.. she currently drinks 26-28 oz of milk a day and is on full table food. I would like for her to still get at least 24 oz of milk a day. I am totally fine with her still having her night time bottle before bed but I would like her to have the sippys during the day. Any suggestions?
Re: Getting rid of the bottle
This...The maximum amount they usually recommend for a one year old is 24oz. If you're giving your child other dairy sources it really should be less milk, too. Too much calcium can inhibit iron absorption.
We cut bottles cold turkey. He wouldn't drink more than an ounce or two out of sippies at the time. When the bottles were gone he was thirsty so he drank more from the cup. It took a few days but soon he was drinking out of it with no problems. We used Zoli cups at first and they were a good transition because they have a weighted straw but they leak like crazy. Now we use these cheap Nuby straw cups I bought at Walmart for two bucks each and he will suck down ten ounces at a time-- more than he ever would from a bottle-- and we have NEVER had a leak in six months. He does occasionally bite the tips and it makes a hole so we have had to replace them a few times but we really like them.
