Walking at 8 months? I call bs.

I was feeling abnormally social at the park yesterday. I already checked, Hell hasn't frozen over. Anyway, I was talking to this mom from NYC and our kids were about a month apart. She was talking about how her daughter might start walking soon, which she did a series of steps there. Very exciting.

Then this other mother showed up with a 15 month old and I remarked how much more grown up she looked compared to our kids. Then one thing and another and she tells us she's so sure on her feet because she started walking at 8 months.

So, what say you? I have heard of walking at 9 but 8? I call BS. This is why I should never abandon my turtle shell! People just lie! ;)

Re: Walking at 8 months? I call bs.

  • My aunt swears my cousin was walking at 7 months. My mom and aunts say they think it was 8 months but yea she walked really early. I walked at 9 months my sister at 8 months. I doesn't mean anything though, my 12 month old isn't walking or taking steps yet. he does walk while holding hands and runs along furniture like a pro though :)

  • My parents swear I walked at 9 too. This broad also wanted us to know her daughter was speaking in three and four word sentences. Again, I suppose it's possible but not bloody likely. The walking was fine but then she went on to brag about how advanced her daughter was. People like that annoy me.

  • Mommy martyr. My baby is better than your baby!!!!!

  • I also thought it was in poor taste because the other mom's baby wasn't walking yet. We all know gross motor development has a huge range but that doesn't stop us from worrying.

  • I've seen it happen. A friends daughter started walking at 8 month's. It was.crazy f I hadn't seen it myself I wouldn't have believed it.

I think it depends on what their definition of walking IS. I call it actually standing unassisted and taking completely unassisted steps.

Our friends believe say their 14 month old is walking when it's pushing its little wheely cart thing (baby walker? I don't know). In that case, H walked in February- which is how long hes been pushing his wheely thing and is completely, absolutely absurd.

But- coupled with the whole "talking sentences" thing, I'd call BS.

This is exactly what I was going to say. It completely depends on her definition of walking. But since it sounds like her daughter is a superspecialsnowflake, I would seriously doubt it.

  • My sister walked at 8 months, I was 9 months. I think that is very early though and I think she was 8 months but closer to 9.

  • I have seen a 9mo walk unassisted (not just steps). I would never believe it if I hadn't seen it.
  • One of my friends has an 18 month old who took his first steps (like 1-2) at 8 months but he didn't really start walking until 9 months. But she counts it as starting at 8 months.
I agree with a lot of the pps who don't really believe it unless they've seen it. O is still not consistently walking though he does take 8-10 steps at a time just not all day every day. If anyone asks me I still say he's learning to walk, because that's what it is for me.

  • Nene took steps at 8 but no official walking 9m and was talking (3-4 words) at 15/16m.
But she was still eating lots of stage 3/toddler foods and couldn't sleep through the night. No child is perfect lol. But I definitely don't social with moms for this reason.

  • I wanna say that C_,mo's ODS was walking very early.  Maybe 8 or 9 months.  I say anything is possible!  My friend's baby was rolling over at 4 weeks.  I saw the video of him doing it with my own eyes!  He's 3 months now and rolling front to back and vice versa AND kinda scooting.  Some babies are just strong and coordinated!

  • Actually, it is possible.  My Granny told me that my Mom started walking a couple of days before she turned eight months old.  She was the third kid and I'm sure she was trying to keep up with her older sisters.  I could believe it if it was a younger sibling.

I totally, totally think its possible.... However... I think it's crazy unlikely that her child walked at 9 months and is now speaking in 3+ word sentences. If it was one OR the other, I'd buy it, but probably not both unless I'd seen it.
This was my thought. Both could be true but try a little modesty, lady, especially when one mom is already clearly wondering if her child is behind!

That's what I was trying to say. Of course it's possible. Heck, James was taking steps at 9 months and full on walking at 9.5.

  • I have a niece who walked before 9 months. A preemie at that.
  • My kid was walking at 5 months.  And by walking I mean holding our hands while he took steps.  lol!   I'm just messing.  I mean he was doing that, but I don't count it as walking.

My LO start *crawling* at 8 months! He didn't walk until a week after he turned 1 year.

But my inlaws say DH walked at 9 months.

  • I know of a little girl who was walking at 8 months...like totally unassisted.  But it was weird to see...her legs were still very bow legged.  I have heard of this happening quite often too, but I also agree it depends on definition for some.  My son probably would have been able to walk at 8 months if he was more sure of himself...he was cruising furniture with very little support.  I would never consider that walking, but I can imagine someone else doing so.

  • Our son was walking confidently at 8 months. It was very strange to see, but definitely true. He took his first unassisted steps on his 7 th month "birthday."
  • DS walked at 8 months but I wouldn't tell that to anyone at the park. I barely tell extended family when they ask because it sounds ridiculous.

I can already see that lady letting everyone in a 100 mile radius know what a star tee-ball player/musician/math genius/whatever her son is when he's older.
  • K started walking at 8 months. I'm not sure why she would brag though. Chasing a walking 8 mo old sucks. They have no natural fear, or awareness of what's going on around them.

  • I have two friends who had 8 month walkers. I saw it myself. It's scary to see tiny things who have no idea what is going on walking around.
  • My nephew was walking really early...9 months or so...and my SIL won't let me forget that Appleseed still isn't walking.

My manager said that her youngest walked at 8 months, but her daughter has been advanced for most things...I don't know how much of that I believe, she isn't one to fudge stories though.
