Security animal/ blanket?

My ds doesn't have a blanket or soft animal that he *has* to have. I've seen people on here that say that their LO's have to have a security type animal/blanket. What gives? Do all kids usually have something that they just have to have or does that show up later?

Re: Security animal/ blanket?

  • I think if your DS doesn't need one, that's great. One less thing you have to worry about losing. He may become attached to something later, though.

  • What Bat said. I thought DS wasn't going to have a security animal either but he just recently became attached to a stuffed puppy he got at Christmas. I didn't push for him to have one either so it's just what they decide. He's already dunked it in the toilet, rolled it in the dirt and taken it in the shower with him. With the danger he puts that thing through, be thankful you don't have to worry about one yet.
  • I was kind of secretly hoping DS would want a certain stuffed animal or blanket because I had a security blanket as a kid.

I just think it's cute as heck to see a toddler snuggle something he loves to sleep but DS doesn't give two craps if he has one blanket or another.
  • We take a duck with us everywhere or at any time sbe will be sleeping.

  • DS1 has a blanket and Elmo that he sleeps with, although we unexpectedly slept over at a friends house last night, and he didn't have it. He did fine without it. Ds2 is very attached to his blanket and grover, but again, did fine without it last night.

  • Charlie doesn't have anything she's attached to. I'm happy about it since I don't have to worry about losing something I can't replace.

  • My mom bought him this Winnie the Pooh lovey when he was born. When we sleep trained at 6 months, I read that it would help to give him something to hold onto, so I started putting it under his arm. He'd usually roll away from it or end up throwing it out of his crib, but it kind of signaled to him that it was time to nap and it became part of our routine.

Now, he won't go to sleep unless it's cuddled up under his arm. I do, however, hate WtP and wish it was something cuter...but my mom bought it for him, so I feel bad replacing it.

  • Olivia loves anything soft. She has a certain bear she loves and soft blankets- nothing specific, but she NEeDs the blanket to sleep

  • My LO is in love with stuffed animals - we usually have to drag one everywhere and she sleeps with one as well. The good news for us is that she's not particular about WHICH one, so we can interchange them - something I'll keep doing intentionally so she doesn't get too attached. She LOOOOVES this stuffed puppy at daycare though. There have been many tears when we leave him there at the end of the day.

  • I do not think a child NEEDS one.  I was a little nervous to introduce one since my brother had 3 blankets until he was almost in 5th grade.  I think it drove my parents crazy.

I stuck the jellycat bunny in DD's crib at any early age because she was a horrible sleeper (I would remove it when she fell asleep).  She loves rubbing the ears before she goes to bed but if you LO is fine without, there is no need to force it.

  • Around 11 months I introduced a lightweight A+A blanket for naps and bedtime - as a transitional object.  Now he knows when he gets his sleepsack on and his blankie that it's time for sleep.  He grabs the blankie and buries his face in it.  We have 4 - and can rotate, he doesn't prefer one.
