Cartoon Question

I have a neighbor kid this morning and tomorrow and (gasp!) turned on cartoons for him since my DD's are still sleeping.

Do you sensor which cartoons they watch?  At what age do you stop?

DD1 is almost 8 and wants to watch SpongeBob which I am not a fan of.  Occasionally it will come on in the afternoon.  It was an option this morning and I turned on Deigo instead.  Neighbor boy is almost 7.

Re: Cartoon Question

  • My kids can watch anything on PBS kids and limited amounts of Nick Jr. We avoid everything else.

  • Why would you sensor Spongebob? It's not educational, but I don't find it to be a bad show, like some of the shows they have now which are gross.

  • Eek, tough to say. I monitor now obviously but not sure what age I will stop being so strict. Then again, my son has watched spongebob a few times when dd was in the hospital and lived to tell the tale. It has no redeeming educational qualities but there's nothing that bad about it so I think I'd let my kids watch at 8 but tough to know for sure.

They have been known to say things I'd prefer my kids not repeat.  It's just not my fav.

  • I dont sensor the cartoons as much as the commercials. We dont watch any of the nick channels at all, but I allow PBS and some Disney Jr. They still have some ads, but it's not an overwhelming amount.

  • I don't monitor her cartoons so much anymore. And most people here don't allow/like spongebob I've noticed- to which I say:  not my hill to die on ;)  I admit my kid watches spongebob, and always has.  I just don't care.   She's not into cartoons as much anymore.  Now it's even worse... it's iCarly, Victorious, etc... which I find SO much more annoying.

  • Wanted to add that Spongebob will stay out of our house as long as possible (and hopefully forever)!

  • No SpongeBob here and I agree with Chapter79 on the iCarly and other shows like that. I caught a bit of one of those shows and the girl was "in love". Ugh. Anyway, we restrict cartoons that have characters calling each other names or using language we don't want (stupid comes to mind). My kids are still little though and repeat everything. I'm not sure what I'll do at 7. They'll hear worse at school.

I'll pretty much allow any cartoon on Disney Jr, Sprout or PBS.

Chapter, do you like Good luck Charlie? I've caught myself watching it when a cartoon will go off, it doesn't seem so bad.
I like that show! So does Alexis. That has an actual TV show feel with story lines, so I like.  iCarly and Victorious are so all over the place, stupid and make no sense. They're sooo annoying.  And my DD LOVES them.

  • We don't have cable, so our only option is PBS for now. When we are at grandparents, they will turn on Nick Jr or Disney.

For me, it's one thing for DD1 to watch it.  Or even DD2 (5.5) - but they have a 3 year old around watching with them!  We do a lot of Charlie and Dog with a Blog - the TV shows.  I have no problem with those.
  • We don't have cable anymore, but when we did I didn't censor their cartoons. No "adult" cartoons obviously, but spongebob, looney toons, etc... All fair game. I don't agree with some of the things they say (see squidward example above) but the kids know stuff like that is mean and don't repeat it.

  • We only do PBS, but my kid is 2.  I do sensor the nieces (age 9 and 10) too.  We don't allow SpongeBob.  I've watched it a few times and feel it's very, very inappropriate.  I think you do what works for your family, even if that means sensoring right up until they move out.  Smurfs and the Simpsons was forbidden at both my house and my DH's house as kids! And Southpark later when it aired - I was in high school and it was off limits.

  • DS1 (8) and DS2 (6) watch a lot of the same shows since they're only 2 years apart. since they're in school it's mainly Wordgirl and Wild Kratts on PBS somedays. We watch PBS shows, a couple on Nick Jr (bubble guppies and phineas and ferb). Disney is only animated shows, nothing that's not a cartoon. But yes we censor.

DD will be 3 on Monday. She doesn't watch tv.
