Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Eating schedule / routine

I'm curious what is your LO's schedule like?
My dd is 9 months and she has 4 bottles a day (7-8 oz each) and small meals in between. But sometimes it's not a meal but rather a little snack. My daily example is bottles at 8a 12p 4p 8p. And she has solids/snacks around 9a 2p 6p.
Should I try to get her to do the bottle and solid more close together instead of spacing them out?
I know she is still young to be so concerned but I'm just wondering what is everyone else doing.
Thanks!!

Re: Eating schedule / routine

  • This is our (rough) weekday schedule (DD is also 9 months old):

    6:30am - 4oz bottle
    8:15am - breakfast
    9:30am - 4oz bottle
    11:15am - lunch
    12:30pm - 4oz bottle
    2:15pm - snack
3:30pm - 4oz bottle (or nurse if it's one of my early work days)
    5pm - dinner
    6pm - nurse
    7pm - nurse to sleep

Daycare has mostly provided this structure.  On the weekends, she nurses on demand and we eat meals when we're hungry - we don't really do snacks.  I don't keep track of the weekends, I just go with the flow.  I wouldn't worry about spacing things perfectly - I'm sure she'll let you know if she's hungry or if it isn't working for her!

  • No schedule for us. We feed 6oz in the morning and 6oz at night. We feed on demand during the day, which seems to be 6 oz every 3 hours. Then he gets solids whenever we eat(so at least 2 meals a day, sometimes more) and snacks in between. We're really lax with scheduling. We try to teach them how to self regulate a bit.

  • I have to admit having a schedule helps me be prepared. I am a sahm and I have a 6yo so I need some structure. lol
I didn't make the schedule my LO did. :) I follow her cues and she seems to stick to the same routine. I just wonder how others are doing it?
  • None of my kids are on a schedule though. We have set breakfast and have dinner about the same time, but don't bother with scheduling things. Whose to say the won't be hungry before or what if Iget hungry before the scheduled time? I've never been a schedule person though.

  • This is pretty much our schedule too.  Pedi said to keep it up until she is 1.

  • LO is just over 9 months old, and this is his rough schedule:

    6:30-7am - wake up
    7am - 7-8 oz breastmilk
7:30-8am - breakfast (oatmeal, yogurt, pancake, fruit)
9ish - morning nap (usually lasts an hour)
    10:30-11am - 7-8 oz breastmilk
12pm - lunch (protein, fruit, veggie, cheese)
1pm - afternoon nap (usually lasts 1.5-2 hours)
    3pm - 7-8 oz breastmilk
5:30pm - dinner (protein, fruit, veggie, yogurt, pasta)
    6:30-7pm - 7-8 oz breastmilk
    7:30pm - bedtime

We are very flexible with his schedule, but he pretty much follow is on his own.  We very rarely do snacks, and when we do, it's always a fruit or veggie.  I also give him sips of water while he eats.
  • I think you're putting too much emphasis on definition and schedule.  To me, a snack is like, crackers or puffs but if she's eating veggies, fruits or meats, that's a meal, regardless of when it's eaten.  There's no rule that says breakfast has to be at 8, lunch at noon and dinner at 6, kwim?

  • DS is 10 months. I SAH and EBF.  Our schedule has been: nurse 6x a day plus 3 solid meals.  But I decided to wean one nursing session down, so for the past 3 days, it's 5x a day nursing, plus 3 solid meals and a snack

I nurse on schedule instead of demand.  OUr schedule is like this:

    6:45am wake up & nurse
    8'ish am b'fast
    9am nurse before 1st nap
11am snack upon waking from 1st nap
    1'ish pm lunch
    2pm nurse before 2nd nap
    4pm nurse after 2nd nap
    630pm dinner
    7:30pm nurse before bed
    DS STTN

I plan to wean the 4pm nursing session when DS turns 11 months, and replace that with a snack.

We've been doing baby led weaning, so DD eats what I eat with me (or really I wait to eat with her!). Her naps are really variable so we don't have fixed times for meal, but we follow this routine. We usually nurse when she wakes, meals 1 hour later and nurse before naps/bed. Here's what our day looks like:
    8ish wake up and nurse
    9ish breakfast
10ish nap (sometimes nurse before nap but I try not to first). Nap is 1-3 hours.
11-1ish wake up from nap, nurse
    1 hour later, lunch
2-3 hours later we she gets tired, nurse then nap. Nap is 1-2 hours.
    Wake up from nap, nurse
7ish dinner when DH gets home from work
    8ish nurse then bedtime routine

She gets water with meals. No snacks yet since I nurse during the day. At this point, nursing is more on a schedule then on demand. Most of the time she is too distracted to initiate nursing, but I wll still nurse on demand when she goes for it.

  • Our schedule is this (the times are just averages, ex. between 7:30 and 8 he wakes up, etc.):

    7:30-8 Wake up
    8-8:30 8 oz bottle
    9:30-10 breakfast
10:30-11 nap (usually lasts for about 1.5-2 hours)
    12:30-1 lunch
    2-2:30 8 oz bottle
3:30-4 nap (usually lasts for about 2-2.5 hours)
    6:30-7ish supper
    8-8:30 8 oz bottle
    8:30-9 or 9:15ish bedtime

  • I have been spacing it out about an hour to hour and half between bottle and solids.  I have twins, so keeping them on a schedule is important for my sanity! LOL
We have a bottle around 7am
    breakfast at 8:15
    bottle 10:30
    lunch 12:15
    bottle 2:30 or 3
Dinner (i just started this week, so timing is approx) 4:30 or 5
    bedtime bottle 6:30
sometimes we have a snack if needed and they take sips of water with every meal. We're still working on the cup thing!

  • We nurse on demand plus breakfast around 7a, lunch around 11a, and dinner around 6pm. I don't really see the point in a nursing schedule, tbh.

i'm a meal prepper, so i always have to eat at a specific time so DD eats whenever and whatever i'm eating :) we both wake up at the same time so it's perfect!

9AM: breakfast, usually oatmeal w/ fruit or toast w/ spread
11AM: little snack, yogurt w/ cereal or some type of finger foods.
1 PM: bottle for nap time
2 PM: lunch, i make mini sandwiches for her.
4 PM: snack, if she wants it.
6PM: dinner, brown rice w/ some kind of protein and veggies. (surprisingly, she picks out all the veggies first lol).

i do still feed her on demand though. you never know when they go through growth spurts :)

  • We don't really have a schedule, either.  My DH and I both work, and when my DH isn't home with the girls (he has a weird schedule), my Dad watches the girls.  Because of this, it's hard to get a schedule going.  It looks something like this lately:

4:30 am (yes, you read that right!):  6 oz. bottle
small nap (30 min)....how can I break this cycle???
7:00 am:  breakfast- solids, pick up foods like we eat
9:30 or 10:  snack, then nap
    12:00:  lunch
    2-3 snack, then nap
    5:30 dinner
    7:20pm:  bedtime bottle, 6 oz
    7:45 in bed after story

This is us exactly. She also gets a bottle around 3am. So she has 24oz a day a lot of food... she's tiny but quite the piggy. She decided a couple months ago that baby food isn't her thing which is nice for us because she just eat whatever we do.

  • wake/6 oz bottle @ 7:30
    breakfast @ 9
    nap @10:30-12:30
    6 oz bottle @ 12:30
    lunch @ 2
    nap @ 3:30-5
    dinner @ 5:30
bath then 6 oz bottle and asleep @ 8:00-8:30

*depending on how active the day was he will drop his second nap and then go to bed at 7 and then sleep till 7am

  • My little girl is 9mos. and her schedules goes like this for the most part...

4am- bottle (6 oz.) back to sleep never wakes up totally until 8:30ish

    9am- breakfast (cereal/formula and fruit)

10am- bottle (6oz.) followed by nap

    12pm-1230- lunch (veggie and fruit)

1pm-2pm- bottle (6 oz.) followed by nap

5-6pm- dinner (meat, veggie and fruit)

8-9pm-bottle (6 oz.) followed by bed

Sometimes we add a bottle here or there depending on what Emma wants or needs.

What I am slightly concerned with is the fact that she does not eat much for finger foods. She eats baby food like a champ but the puffs and other things like that make her gag the second she puts it on her tongue. I believe it is a texture thing. I am not sure what to do about it though does anyone else have this issue with their LO?
