Moving from purees to finger food

Has anyone started their little one on small bites of food? Little man has been slamming down pureed baby food since around 5 months. He's started to take the spoon from me during meals and the other day he tried to swipe pizza off my plate (lol he's not getting pizza anytime soon ;) ) What's safe to start with? I'm terrified of him choking. He has zero teeth. Mushy stuff cut into a billion pieces right?

Re: Moving from purees to finger food

  • Recently I heard someone say that if they do purees too long they wont want to eat chunks of food. So this had me worried of course lol. So last week I gave LO bananas from the jar so this week I could try just mushing a fresh one. I also gave her mums to get used to the idea of a different texture. Baby steps I guess but Im just winging it

  • we have given a few mum mums and a few puffs but otherwise its mostly still purees. I have also given him avocado and a mashed up banana so he gets the thicker texture...but nothing else. too nervous of him choking and i dont think he gets the chewing concept.

We have slowly been introducing finger foods. So far we have introduced baby puffs, banana chunks, watermelon chunks, cherrios broken half and beans cut in half. He loooooves eating anything and he "chews" all the food with his gums (my boy doesn't have teeth either). I figure that some babies don't pop any teeth until after their first birthday yet they will be eating solid foods before that time so I am just going for it. Just do whatever makes you comfortable!

  • You will be amazed what kids can eat without teeth.  My older two didn't get their first teeth until 14.5 months and 16 months yet they still ate everything in site.  We've always started with things that easily dissolve such as puffs, mum mums, etc until they get the hang of eating.  Once they start figuring that out I move on to other things.

  • We've done finger foods from the beginning. DS loves it! He eats bananas, avocados, bread (I usually put hummus or applesauce on it), tomatoes, salad greens, steamed brocolli and carrots... the list goes on! Cut the food into pieces that are long and thin and let him feed himself. There will be LOTS of gagging in the beginning, but don't let that freak you out. Choking is different from gagging. Gagging is good since it helps the baby push the food up to the front of their mouth again.
  • I give my LO pieces of whatever I eat within reason..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • We've only done mum mums and banana chunks so far but I've just recently started seeing him "chew". I want to start getting more adventurous though!

  • We've been slowly doing some chunk finger foods. So far he's had avacado, veggie munchers from Gerber, toast, puffs, and broccoli. He seems to "chew" the food, even with just two teeth. Right now the harder skill seems to be picking it up and getting it to his mouth, so he only truly eats the food if I pick it up and feed it to him lol. Most of the time I find it in the seat of the high chair. Tomorrow we will try banana, and I was thinking of cooking up some small pasta shells or cutting ziti into smaller pieces and letting him try that.
