Preparing avocado

I would like to introduce avocado to dd diet- what is the best way to prepare it? Do you just mash it up and serve? So far I have only served oatmeal...

Re: Preparing avocado

  • We actually used a bit of water to thin it out.  Avocado is yummy

  • mash or puree (food processor or immersion blender) with a little BM/water/formula
  • I'm mostly a lurker, but I blend it in the ninja with a little water, and add a little water or formula when I'm ready to serve it if it needs it.

  • I mash it with a fork and add milk/formula or mashed banana.

  • Did anyone find the avocado to be gassy? My little guy loves it, but 2 nights in a row woke up screaming an hour after I put him down. I gave him sweet potatoes last night and he slept like normal. He's also teething, so that could be the problem too, that's why I ask. It would be a shame bc he loves it!

The first day we tried avocado, he did fine - we fed it to him at 11am. The second day we fed it to him around 3 or 4pm, and he was  up screaming for a lot of the night. :( I'm not 100% sure that's what it was but I stopped giving it to him just in case. We plan on trying sweet potatoes today after not doing any solids this past week.
  • Not sure why, LO did pretty well with avocado the first 3 days we fed him, took down a whole tablespoon, but now he will gag excessively and turn his head away.  Tried switching to banana and for some reason he hates it.  Probably the first baby ever to hate bananas.  Guess I am going to stick with avocado and not allow him to dislike it.  'This is what you're eating, little dude."  I guess I could try sweet potatoes too, he is 5 months + a week, sweet potatoes are considered same early stage 1 as avo/nanas, right?

No matter which food you want to try with your LO I'd suggest giving it to them earlier rather than later in the day. We started sweet potatoes two weeks ago and if given at lunch time we're able to avoid the night time crisis. If given at dinner time we have such a hard time with DS at night**... He takes to them well, and has actually been on his third veggie in two weeks...

As far as avocado goes, I agree with PP about using a little BM or F to loosen it up a little bit, and if it's super ripe you can just mash it with a fork.

**With his poop, I mean. He has a harder time passing gas/bowel movement at night. He's overtired and then he won't sleep. His digestion is excellent. He's still on 35-38+ oz of formula per 24h period, plus his solids intake.
