Baby with diarreah??

So my 14 mos old has had diarreah since Wed night. She has no other symptoms and is acting completely normal and eating and drinking fine. She is actually sleeping great too. Would it last this long if it was from teething?? What else could it be? Would you all doc or wait it out a few more days?

  • No fever? I would push fluids, pedialyte, BRAT diet and if no success in 3 days or so I would call.
  • No fever. Definitely been pushing fluids and she ate a whole banana today and rice for dinner. When they say BRAT diet does that mean only those foods or can she have other things but just including them?

  • Ill pick up some pedialite in the morning.

  • It could be teething or it just be a virus. I just got over one, and it lasted exactly 3 days with no fever and only one bout of vomiting. In your shoes, I would probably not call the doctor unless the LO wasn't eating and drinking really well, started running a high fever, or still had symptoms by Monday morning. I am not a big call-the-doc person, though.

  • Only reason I would call tomorrow instead of Monday would be because on Monday I'd have to take time off work. Sometimes it's just easier to get it taken care of on the weekend. I'm going to see how she seems in the morning and give her a probiotic as well. I'm hoping it will pass soon!!!

  • LO had diarrhea off and on for almost 8 weeks.  We were doing a daily probiotic, she had stool tests, she had allergy tests.  Everything was normal.  Just in the last few days she's returned to solid poo.  Her doctor wasn't worried unless she was losing weight.

BRAT diet means only those foods, other foods could negate the whole effect.

  • My DD had diarrhea a while back for about a week.  I had tried the BRAT diet, Pedialyte, and while she was drinking well, with no fever, the diarrhea continued.  I called the PCP and they told me if the BRAT diet failed, to try a high dairy with high fat diet.  Completely the opposite of what I was doing.  They said things like whole milk yogurt and cheese would slow the gut motility down enough so that the food wouldn't just run right through her system.  It worked, and within 12 hours, she was totally fine. If you've tried BRAT, and it's failed, it might be worth a shot!!
  • DH has had a few bouts of diarhea.  Advice from our pediatrician is that as long as they act normally, you shouldn't worry unless you see no improvement for 6 - 7 days, because that's how long the virus takes to clear the system.  After the initial 6 - 7 days, it may take another week before the system gets back to completely normal.

I ended up calling doc and they said if it continues for 2 weeks to call back. She's okay now. It ended up lasting 5 days and then cleared up. Unfortunately, my DD has a milk allergy so I wouldn't have been able to do the dairy suggestion :(
