I posted on this a few weeks back. I thought we had kicked it, but no...
My son is 14 months old today. He goes to sleep great on his own (and has since an early age). We read a couple books, put him in his crib with his blankie and paci, and he goes to sleep. Sometimes he plays for a bit, but then he's usually out pretty quick.
Around 4 am we usually hear him start crying (this has been going on for 6+ weeks most nights). He gets more upset when we go in his room, so often we just leave him be, praying he will settle himself back to sleep. But he doesn't. The only thing that works is giving him milk. But we feed him a lot during the day and make sure he drinks lots of milk before bed- he really shouldn't be hungry at 4am. I can't say we have been entirely consistent with not giving him milk, so maybe that's the issue- we need to just suck it up and stick to our guns? Truly if I thought it was hunger (rather than comfort), I have no problem with him having milk. I just really don't think that's it. And my understanding is that growth spurts are 1-2 weeks max, and we are well beyond that...
Listening to him cry is agonizing. I know most here aren't proponents of CIO, but it's really been the only sleep training we have found effective for our son because he seems more distressed if we go in and leave than if we just don't go in at all. We are at a loss... I'm 3 months pregnant and need the sleep (and so does he)! Any ideas?
