Success after IF

Updated!!!!! Losing my mind ;(

edited September 2013 in Success after IF

I am in the midst of night 4 of mysery with LO.....these nights have consisted of waking every 2 hours, only sleeping when held, boycotting crib, fussing etc. I don't believe this is a random, flukey shift in patterns, I believe it's a teething nightmare (although nightmare may be the wrong choice in words since one needs to sleep to have that). Things began falling apart 2 weeks ago when LO started with a runny nose, I watched her carefully for days to determine if she was sick or not but nothing. Since then we have had EVERY, and I mean every single sign of teething except for the god damn tooth popping. I have questioned myself all weekend if she could have an ear infection. She's barely been in her crib at all ( been doing better in RNP, prob bc of runny nose). So on top of this, all I can think of is how I've killed our sleep habits :( I really can't take it and am putting serious thought into calling the pedi in the AM- but I feel like they will be no help :( I am sure the nurse will tell me "I'm sure it's teething" over the phone and that will be that. What I want is for them to feel her gums (bc I feel nothing) and then tell me how long I can expect my life to suck for and then hold my hand and tell me that after this she will indeed STTN (even if its not true. I am vulnerable, I need something good). I gave her Tylenol at bed tonight and 3 of those 4 hours after were her best all weekend. She slept deeply and soundly in her crib. However giving my 5 month old Tylenol scares the bejesus out of me and will not be done nightly. Sorry for rambling - but I'm up with LO again and seriously about to melt down something fierce :(

Update - we're back from the pedi. What a freaking joke. To be  honest - the answer I was expecting on the phone today is exactly what I got in person - guess they were just greedy and wanted their $25 copay.

According to the Dr. M "does not have an ear or bronchial infection (no huge surprise there) she's also not teething (b/c I guess in his world teething is only when you cut a tooth)...... but she "might" have a cold." THanks Buddy - I'm so glad I took her out of daycare - took a few hours of PTO time and paid you for that deep insight.  Also - if the tylenol helps, than I can give it to her for weeks on end. But why would I do that? You just told me there's nothing wrong here?!?!?

She may be crying and fussing at night b/c she knows i'll tend to her. Yet when I asked him if this was his way of telling me I needed to start sleep training and/or CIO he told me "I didn't say that...." Really, that was the answer. I also asked him if he thought she was ready for that given her size (LO is sort of a peanut - 5 months old but only about 14.5 lbs if that)......he told me she could be STTN given her size - but I should use my mothers intuitition at night as to whether or not she need me.

But don't worry - he kissed her on her forehead and said "Be Well"...... so it's all good.

Yeah, and I thought I was losing my mind before. Awesome. Can't wait for another night from hel! of being up every 2 hours or so tonight.

Re: Updated!!!!! Losing my mind ;(

  • Have you thought about an amber teething necklace? I got mine online from inspired by Finn and it was a life changer.
I'm sorry y'all are having a rough time, sleep issues are the worst. E's been up from 2-5 the last 3 nights.
Even if the pedi does say yeah it's probably teething, at least you'll feel better and not worry about the ears. I'd call for peace of mind.

  • I would personally listen to your gut and call the pedi.  Even if you just get to speak to the nurse, they might give you more insight or tell you to come in.  That's what they are there for!!

Hope you both get some sleep soon!!

  • My personal mom rule is that if I've thought to myself "I should probably call the pedi" two or three days in a row, I call. You could always call and talk to the nurse, and see what they have to say.

As far as Tylenol goes, DD has had a LOT of tylenol in her short life. She had constant ear infections for the first six months, and she's had sinus infections a lot, not to mention teething. I know it's scary to give LO meds, but I don't think you should feel bad about giving your LO tylenol every once in a while if she is in pain! Don't beat yourself up, mama!

  • Thanks ladies.

I called the advise nurse and much to my surprise they said to bring her in to rule out an infection.  My pedi actually gets some points for this - I feel like they have been too quick to dismiss me the other times i've called.

I really don't think it's an infection but am hopeful I can get some advice and peace of mind from this appointment.... I have been crying all morning because I am just SO exhausted and frustrated....

We're going in at 3:15..... I'll let you know how we make out.

  • GL today! I hope you get some help this afternoon and some more sleep tonight! FWIW, if it is teething it is very painful. That is what Tylenol is for. If you were in pain like that, wouldn't you take Tylenol yourself? We always gave Tylenol and Ibuprofen when he was old enough during teething. DH read that it is so painful that if an adult was going through the same thing he/she would need morphine to control the pain. (((((Hugs))))))

  • Maren went through something similar when getting her bottom two teeth and now again with her top two.  Teething is a b*tch.

I will say this, with Shannon, my first, I was super reluctant to give Tylenol and so I opted for Hylands.  With Maren, my fourth, I'm giving her baby Motrin just about every night to try and stave off her waking up.  I hate to see her in so much pain and honestly, I need to sleep as much as she does.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Sorry it's been rough.  Teething is the worst!  M's 6th tooth finally cut through last week.  He was crying/screaming every night for close to 2 weeks before that happened.  He also has had a congested nose/runny nose for 3 weeks.

Now things are finally getting back to normal... until the next tooth comes. sigh.

Thank You! I purposely left this thought out of my original post as I was trying to figure out if I was over reacting, but yes I totally want to switch.

First of all - I complained to my husband after DD's 4 month appointment that I felt like I wasn't getting straight answers from them (the topic at that time was when to start her on food)..... and the above converstation is further evidence of that feeling. I am an a FTM - I have no idea what I'm doing, I expect some insight from my pediatrician if I ask for it. Perhaps I should lower my expectations :/

Additionally, I am not a neurotic parent. I can count the number of times on one hand that I've called the advise nurses....Not to mention this is the first time I've brought her in for a sick visit at over 5months, I don't deserve to be made to feel like a fool. Not to mention - if I've learned one thing from IF, it's the importance of good bedside manner with a dr.

I'm honestly livid - I'd like to throat punch this man.
