Another BF obstacle

I'm pretty sure I have thrush. I googled it but I just wanted to ask here because I trust you ladies also! I had finally reached that glorious time when breastfeeding stopped hurting. It was essentially pain-free. But starting two days ago, suddenly my right nipple is killing me. (Actually both boobs/nipples hurt but the right one is much worse.) It hurts pretty much all the time whether I am BF or not. It seems to be getting worse. Parts of my nipple are bright red and part is blanched. I also have been getting deep shooting pain in my breast. I haven't really noticed any white patches in DD's mouth, but she has been much more fussy during feedings the last few days. She pulls off my breast continuously but yet is still very hungry. She cries and gets very frustrated. We have her next pedi appt on the 19th but I'm thinking I should contact her sooner? I read it can kind of be a long process to completely get rid of it. I appreciate any advice on this! Breastfeeding certainly isn't easy. First DD had breastmilk jaundice, then I had multiple clogged ducts, followed by a big dip in my supply due to medication I had to take, then DD refusing bottles, now possibly thrush? Sigh... Thanks ladies.

  • No advice but I'm having some pain as well. I have like little white blisters on my nips. Do you? Mine are pretty red as well and last night I was having some shooting pains. This sucks. I hope you don't have thrush!

I actually do have a white thing on my nipple. I forgot to mention that. It just started today. That's another sign of it right?
  • I am just getting over thrush and your symptoms sound very similar to mine. However, my LO had the white spots in his mouth. My pedi was able to diagnose us based on his spots alone and gave us both medicine. I would recommend going to the doctor as soon as you can just because the pain gets worse if left untreated. Good luck!
  • I am also getting over thrush. My only symptom was pain in my right breast, specifically a feeling of shards of glass in my nipple the whole time LO was nursing. LO got a yeasty diaper rash but no oral thrush. I cleared mine up with APNO (all purpose nipple ointment) and took an oral probiotic. LO got Nystatin diaper cream. I would definitely go to your midwife/OB. Also read on kellymom.com -- there is a lot of good advice.

  • I have white on my nipples most of the time but it's actually vasospasm, and there is pain associated with that too, but I've gotten used to it and been able to better manage it so they don't blanche as often. I sometimes get the shooting pain deep in my breast tissue but I've figured out it's actually when he's due for a feeding, it's like my boobs know... I have gotten checked for thrush and I def. don't have it. Hopefully it's not thrush but a coincidence of symptoms but either way, good luck!

This morning is when it started really hurting when DD fed. Since then I've been only feeding her from my left breast and I've been pumping the right one. It still hurts to pump but not as much as DD feeding.

I've had the blanching and the shooting pain before also but both were minor and isolated incidents. Now everything is happening at once. The symptoms that made me think thrush the most was the severe pain while feeding and DD suddenly being fussy while feeding. I'm glad you don't have it. So far it's no fun.
  • LO doesn't have to have oral thrush. DS2 only had a yeast diaper rash. It went away quickly with the cream but I'm still fighting it. I tried the baking soda remedy and now I'm trying the vinegar. No APNO where I live. :-(

This is us. LO has a yeasty diaper rash and I have it on my nipples but luckily his mouth has remained clean. We are on round 2 of diflucan...this stuff is so hard to kill.
FWIW, my crunchy OB said genetian violet is more useful for vaginal yeast than anything else.

  • We just got back from the pedi with this! Oh my gosh I wish I would of listened to my gut and gone earlier. My nipples were burning and super red, I almost cried when I would feed her!! That burning was most of the day and I had shooting pains. I didn't see any thrush on DD so I didn't call. Friday I started seeing patches on the inside of her lips and cheeks. I called and they ordered diflucan for her and had me take her in today. I started it yesterday morning because of pharmacy issues and today at her appt she only had a couple of patches left. The pedi gave me a prescription too and I'm hoping that it will clear up quick! I think I need to start taking a probiotic because even when I was pregnant I had recurrent yeast infections! Call the Dr to be sure, hope you start feeling better!!
  • @SummerBebe47 I agree with PPs about getting in to see your doctor tomorrow. Also be sure to be extra diligent if you develop a fever. It could be a sign of mastitis, which you do not want to mess around with.
