A toddler and a NICU baby...

I am being discharged tomorrow (I should probably be excited to go but I hate not being close to lo) I'm about 25 minutes away from my hospital. I'm super concerned on how I will split my time between being home with DD who is almost 2, and coming to NICU to work on breast feeding the new baby. The nurse told me that dd 1 can tell time and the new baby can't, so its important to spend time with her the most. But today was our first official day of breast feeding and I know it will be harder if I don't get here for a lot of feedings because lo isn't doing wonderfully at it. My husband is gone for work but I have my mom to watch DD while I'm gone. I would really appreciate any tips or suggestions on how to manage time in both places. I will pump at home but would like to make as many of the 3 hour spaced feedings as possible. Help? ETA lo was born Tuesday at 35 weeks 1 day. I need a new ticker!

Re: A toddler and a NICU baby...

  • I have a 3yo and twins that spent 13 days in the NICU. My oldest goes to daycare, so his routine wasn't changed. Pretty much instead of going to work, I'd go to the hospital. Id make it for the 9am, noon, 3pm feedings. Once or twice a week I stayed for 6pm but it was important to me to be home at night w my oldest.

My H would occasionally drive down after DS1 went to bed, esp if I had milk to drop off that would get them through the night. That was really hard for him though.

I would BF and then pump the feedings I was there and they'd be bottle or tube fed the rest. We were able to EBF once we got home.

  • I have a 23 month old, 11 year old, and my DS was born at 32w5d and has been in the NICU for 2 weeks today. We are definitely struggling with making sure everyone gets the time they need. I like what you were told that your toddler has a sense of time. That seems like good advice. I just wanted to say good luck and that this will pass. Hugs and strength to you!!

  • I didn't have a toddler when DS was born, BUT he was not a very good breastfeeder in the NICU. Once we came home and we could work on it around the clock, he was completely fine. Don't let the beginning struggles frustrate you or let you think it will never work.
