I am also due in feb and have run into wait lists at birth centers. Not sure how far you want to travel though. The mn birth center in Minneapolis is full. But the healthy foundations birth center in St. Paul is still accepting patients. Not sure of options north of the metro..
Most hospitals in the region have Midwives hooked up with them (Regions, Woodwinds, St. John's, St. Joes, United, Methodist, etc.). I'd opt for that given that they all need to go through some pretty strict rigors in order to work in a hospital in terms of education and certifications and if in the unlikely event something goes less than expected, you're already at a hospital birthing center and can immediately adjust without putting you or the baby at a higher risk. At the end of the day you are the one in charge of your L&D regardless of where you choose to deliver and the cost is going to come out about the same by the time all nickels and dimes are added up. Plus, I will say this, it was nice not to have to rush to get home after delivering and when I had complications post-delivery with DD it's a good thing I was there... That is why in MN it is a law that insurance is required to cover a 48 hour stay after you deliver!
