Fluoride?

We are on well water and use reverse osmosis for our drinking water so it is not fluoridated and DD brushes with a non fluoride toothpaste. Our pedi practices integrative medicine so prefers natural treatments if available and I trust him. He prescribed a fluoride supplement for B at half the standard dosage since she's not getting any. Our dentist said she needs at least a little too. But MIL is all "fluoride causes cancer!" MIL is anti vax and anti anything non organic or not made by the Amish (she's a retired nurse FFS?!?). DH knows she's BSC but is kinda listening to her on this for some reason. I'm going ahead with it anyway (when I remember) but wondered if any of you are supplementing?

FTR, B is fully vaxed and doing fine so far.

Re: Fluoride?

  • Indeed, MILs #1 source for all her information is The Pope. No critical or rational thinking for oneself allowed!

  • We used fluoridated nursery water to mix formula when DS was on that. His toothpaste also has a little fluoride. Given the amounts of fluoride in these things, I don't see how they could be of any harm. Chronic exposure in high doses I think is what should be of concern.
  • I agree with you all and glad to see it's not a hot button topic here. Thanks for the feedback.

  • If you're water doesn't contain fluoride, then you need a little bit (not as much as a lot of Drs think, though, so good for your pedi who only prescribed half!).

The risk of too much fluoride, is that it can cause fluorosis, which is permanent teeth damage.

We have fluoride in our water, so we don't use toothpaste with fluoride, or a supplement.

  • We just had our 1 year check up and the pedi said we don't need to use fluoride toothpaste yet.   :-?
